COMM 110 Week 1 Introductions

Record a 2- to 5-minute video within Bongo™ in which you answer the following questions:

  • What is your name?
  • Where are you from?
  • What is an interesting fact about you (i.e., any special talents or interests)?
  • What are you studying? Why?
  • What is the value in learning about public speaking and effective communication? In what ways might you use public speaking in your personal life and career?

COMM 110 Week 2 Informative Presentation

The most effective presentations are customized to the intended audience. Consider how an audience can influence the messaging for a presentation topic.

Part A

Select one topic and one audience from the following lists of potential topics and audiences.

Topics

  • A recent event in the news or from your community
  • A significant event in history
  • A summary of a national law
  • Another topic as approved by your instructor

Audiences

  • A group of elementary or school-aged children
  • A group of recent high school graduates
  • A group of elderly adults
  • A group of your workplace superiors
  • A group of visiting scholars from a foreign country
  • Another group as approved by your instructor

Create an outline in preparation for your presentation, using the Informative Presentation Worksheet as a guide.

Refer to Ch. 15 of Public Speaking for College & Career for more information on informative speeches.

Part B

Review the following Bongo™ articles, to help you complete your recording:

  • How to Record a PowerPoint Presentation on a Single Screen

Create a 5- to 8-minute informative video presentation in Bongo™ that is based on your outline and directed toward your selected audience about your selected topic.

COMM 110 Week 3 Demonstration Presentation

To explore the use of visual aids and nonverbal and verbal communication, you will either demonstrate a task or explain an event or phenomenon. You may wish to create an outline to help structure your information.

Choose from the following demonstration examples or select another professional topic of interest to you:

  • Preparing a recipe
  • Building or assembling an item, such as a piece of furniture or model plane
  • Creating a do-it-yourself project or craft

Access Bongo™ by selecting the Presentation tab, then the external content launch link. Within the Activities List section of Bongo™, select the Demonstration Presentation Activity.

Create a 5- to 7-minute video of yourself in Bongo™ demonstrating how to do a task. It is important to be mindful of your verbal and nonverbal cues throughout your demonstration.

Complete a peer review for at least two of your classmates’ demonstrations by commenting on what you liked about the presentation and what he or she could improve.

Be prepared to give feedback to your classmates’ Week 3 Demonstration Presentation in class.

COMM 110 Week 4 Persuasive Presentation

Oftentimes, one must persuade an audience to act. This requires the presenter to speak to the history of the presentation topic, as well as consider how best to persuade their audience to take the action suggested. If you find it helpful, you may wish to create an outline to help you prepare for your presentation.

Select a topic from the following list:

  • An issue in your community or on a national scale that requires a resolution, such as a local policy or law you feel should be created or changed
  • An event or action plan for your local community or workplace, such as hosting an art fair, introducing a recycling program, or cleaning up a local park
  • Another topic as approved by your instructor

  • Summarizes the topic and the effect of the issue on the community
  • Proposes a solution or plan of action that addresses the selected issue or event, while including a balanced summary of potential audience responses in order to best persuade everyone to action
  • Includes visual aids and outside resources
  • Uses effective language to persuade your audience

As you have experienced in this class, you may be called on to either provide feedback or incorporate feedback in a workplace project.

Write a 175- to 350-word reflection that contains responses to the following questions:

  • What role do peer review and critique play in effective presentations?
  • What are some constructive presentation and speech critique methods?
  • How do you plan to implement your classmates’ suggestions in future school or work presentations?
  • How do you plan to incorporate the successful practices you have observed in your classmates’ presentations into your future presentations?
  • What are some effective group presentation methods or skills?

Create an 8- to 10- slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation, then record a 5- to 7-minute video within Bongo™ giving your presentation. Your presentation should include the following:

  • A description of what makes an effective listener
  • An explanation of why listening skills are important for effective presentations
  • A description of common symptoms of poor listening skills
  • A description of at least two methods for improving one’s listening skills
