VCT 236 Week 1 Individual: Image Editing Portfolio – Part I

Your favorite local photographer is hiring an image editor. In order to apply for the position, you need to build a portfolio showing that you have the skills needed for the job. Each week you will build on this project and the final portfolio is due in Week Five.

Select a copyright-free image from the Web that you want to use for your portfolio. Select one you consider to be designed well, but could use some basic editing for enhancement.

Open the image in Adobe® Photoshop® and save a copy of the original file. Next, perform the following basic photo corrections:

  • Adjust the resolution and image size as appropriate for the chosen image.
  • Straighten and/or crop the image for enhancement.
  • Adjust the color and tone as appropriate.
  • Sharpen the image as needed.
  • Enhance the image, using at least one photo restoration tool (e.g., healing brushes, clone tool, content-aware patch).
  • Save your final image.

Note: The final version of the image will be needed for your portfolio due in Week Five.

Create a 4-slide PowerPoint® presentation to compare the before and after images. Include the following:

  • The before image for which you performed basic photo corrections
  • Final image
  • Explanation ofthe changes you made to the image and how they enhanced the overall image
  • Citation ofthe image consistent with APA guidelines

VCT 236 Week 2 Individual: Image Editing Portfolio – Part II

Continue working on the Portfolio project due in Week Five.

Select a new copyright-free image from the Web that you want to use for your portfolio. The image should be a portrait containing at least one person.

Open the image in Adobe® Photoshop® and perform the following photo retouching tasks:

  • Apply any necessary basic photo edits (e.g., crop, straighten, tonal correction). Use layers and selection tools while editing.
  • Apply at least one color adjustment. Use at least two photo retouching tools and techniques (e.g., color replacement, whiten teeth and eyes, healing and cloning tools).
  • Save your final image.

Note: The final version of the image will be needed for your portfolio due in Week Five.

Create a 4-slide PowerPoint® presentation to compare the before and after images.

Include the following:

  • The before image for which you performed photo retouching
  • Final image
  • Explanation of the changes you made to each image as well as the composite image
  • Citation ofthe image consistent with APA guidelines

VCT 236 Week 3 Individual: Image Editing Portfolio – Part III

Continue working on the Portfolio project due in Week Five.

Select at least two new copyright-free images from the Web that you want to use for your portfolio. These images will be used to create a composite.

Consider finding one image that would make a good background and other images that might work well in a composition.

Open the images in Adobe® Photoshop® and perform the following tasks:

  1. Apply any necessary basic photo edits (e.g., crop, straighten, tonal correction).
  2. Combine photos to create an effective composite image using layers and selection tools.
  3. Use blending tools and refine edge, as appropriate.
  4. Apply color correction methods, as needed.
  5. Make use of text, drawing, or painting tools within the composite image.
  6. Save your final image.

Note: The final version of the image will be needed for your portfolio due in Week Five.

Create a 4-slide PowerPoint® presentation to compare the before and after images.

Include the following:

  • All before images that were combined to create the final composite
  • Final image
  • Explanation of the changes you made to each image as well as the composite image
  • List of the tools you used to create the composite and any challenges you experienced during this assignment
  • Citation ofthe image consistent with APA guidelines

VCT 236 Week 4 Individual: Image Editing Portfolio – Part IV

Continue working on the Portfolio project due in Week Five.

Select at least two new copyright-free images from the web that you want to use for your portfolio. These images will be used to create a second composite.

Open the images in Adobe® Photoshop® and perform the following tasks:

  1. Apply any necessary basic photo edits (i.e. crop, straighten, tonal correction).
  2. Combine photos to create an effective composite image using layers and selection tools.
  3. Use blending tools and refine edge, as appropriate.
  4. Apply color correction methods, as needed.
  5. Make use of filters, adjustments, and blending modes within the composite image.
  6. Use the text tool to create text and apply at least three layer styles to the text.
  7. Save your final image.

Note: The final version of the image will be needed for your portfolio due in Week Five.

Create a 4-slide PowerPoint® presentation to compare the before and after images.

Include the following:

  • All before images that were combined to create the final composite
  • Final image
  • Explanation of the changes you made to each image as well as the composite image
  • List of the tools you used to create the composite, including how and where you used filters, adjustments, blending modes, text, and the three layer styles you chose for the text
  • Citation ofthe image consistent with APA guidelines

VCT 236 Week 5 Individual: Image Editing Portfolio Final Project

Complete the Portfolio Project.

Using feedback received from your facilitator and the learning team collaboration discussions throughout the course, make any necessary improvements to your portfolio images.

Save all images in JPG format.

Use Adobe® Bridge to organize all of your image files created for the Portfolio Project during this class into a collection. Ensure that each image has an appropriate file name that identifies the week the image was created and the name of the image (e.g., “Week2_Portrait”). Add appropriate metadata and keywords to each file.

In Adobe® Bridge, using the “Output” menu, create a PDF portfolio using the “Fine Art Mat Template” setting. Update the settings as you desire, making sure that each image is clearly displayed on its own page. Include the file names under the “Overlays” menu for each image.

Include and demonstrate the following in your PDF portfolio document:

  • Four images (i.e., your final images saved from Weeks One through Four)
  • Use of multiple layers and selection tools, such as used in the compositions from Weeks Three and Four
  • Use of blending and refine edge for clean selections and edges
  • Blending modes
  • Color adjustments and correction
  • Photo retouching
  • Text and text effects
  • Effective design principles and composition
  • Effects and filters
  • Masks and channels

Save your PDF portfolio document in a .zip folder.

Submit the Image Editing Portfolio Final Project to the Assignment Files tab.
