Social Studies Outreach

This week, you may choose from three different assignment options. Select Option A, Option B, or Option C to complete your assignment.

Option A: Social Studies Outreach – Parental Involvement

Last year, parental involvement in your classroom was rare. You have just finished revising your instructional strategies and you must find a way to involve parents in your social studies instruction.

Resource: Brochure Template

Create a letter or brochure for parents that provides opportunities to get involved in the school and the classroom.

Include the following in your brochure:

  • Two ways parents can become involved in social studies instruction
  • One way other community members can become involved in social studies instruction
  • Two schoolwide resources and two community resources that support social studies instruction

Option B: Social Studies Outreach – Pilot Program

Your district wants to implement a way to involve parents in the school and community. You have been selected to participate in the team that will implement the program. The district has asked that you create a presentation for social studies teachers who will be participating in the pilot program.

Create a 3- to 5-slide presentation on how to get parents and the community involved in your school.

Include speaker notes with your presentation.

Include the following in your presentation:

  • Two ways parents can become involved in social studies instruction
  • One way other community members can become involved in social studies instruction
  • Two schoolwide resources and two community resources that support social studies instruction

Option C: Social Studies Outreach – Teacher Take Away

The principal at your school has been impressed with how you have been able to engage parents, the community and school, and external resources in social studies instruction. The department chair has asked you to create a handout for the teacher in-service training about how involvement has helped you manage your classroom behaviorally and instructionally.

Create a handout for the teacher in-service training.

Include the following in your handout:

  • Two ways parents can become involved in social studies instruction
