In the years of middle childhood, there is a wide developmental range that is considered typical for a child’s physical and social/emotional growth. Alternatively, in relation to cognitive development, this period is often when learning delays or difficulties may present themselves. As an elementary-age teacher, it’s imperative to know and understand the stages of cognitive development during middle childhood so that you’re better able to recognize learning delays and difficulties. Using information from Chapter 12, “Cognitive Development in Middle Childhood,” describe how you would set up your future classroom, as a third grade teacher, based on your understanding of student’s information processing, mental, and language development. Explain and provide specific examples to support your answer.
