Week One begins with the introduction of European culture to the Americas starting in the 16th century. Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

Week Two moves us forward to the turbulent times of the Revolutionary War in America. The 18th century began as a time of strengthening ties between the Colonies and the British Empire; however, this relationship soon deteriorated. The French and Indian Wars, which initiated the Stamp Act and other taxations, began a period of opposition and violent protest to British control. In 1776, after more than 10 years of struggle, American colonists were persuaded that separating from Great Britain was the only way forward.

The preamble to the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, has been hailed as an example of Enlightenment.

Discussion Questions:

How are the principles of Enlightenment reflected in the Declaration of Independence? Discuss the contrast between the equality and individual liberties promoted in the declaration and the reality of inequality in colonial America. Why does the Declaration continue to be an inspiration for international human rights today?

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

The early 1800s saw the beginning of American expansion west of the Mississippi River. The Louisiana Purchase, orchestrated by Thomas Jefferson in 1803, doubled the previous territory of the newly formed United States. Jefferson proposed exploration of the Louisiana Purchase and funded an expedition team headed by Lewis and Clark to map the lands newly purchased from France and to find a Northwest Passage.

Discussion questions:

What do you see as the primary benefits of the Lewis and Clark expedition? Were Jefferson’s expectations for the expedition realized? One of the effects of American expansion to the west was additional displacement of Native Americans. The three day battle of Gettysburg in 1863 is recorded as the largest and costliest fight in terms of soldiers lost in the America Civil War. General Lee and the Confederate Army were defeated, and the loss turned the tide of the war in favor of the North. President Lincoln was invited to address the audience at a dedication ceremony for the soldiers who fell at Gettysburg. His two minute message has resonated for 150 years.

Consider Lincoln’s statement from the Gettysburg Address where he says this nation “shall have a new birth of freedom.”
