BIO 410 Wk 1 Discussion – Mitosis and Meiosis

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

As we begin to explore genetics, we start with cell division, chromosomes, and patterns of inheritance. The structure of cells is elaborate and complex, and most components are involved directly or indirectly with genetic processes. Mitosis and meiosis are mechanisms by which cells distribute the genetic information contained in their chromosomes to progeny cells in a precise, orderly fashion.

Why is there a need for mitosis and meiosis? Are there characteristics that make them redundant? Explain. If you created an organism, would you use mitosis or meiosis in reproduction? Why? Provide two examples in nature of organisms that only use one process.

Due Monday

Reply to at least 2 of your classmates. Be constructive and professional in your responses.

BIO 410 Wk 2 Discussion – Genetic Code

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

In Week One, you were introduced to cell division, chromosomes, and patterns of inheritance. Week Two examines the structures that facilitate those processes: DNA, RNA, and proteins. Genetic information is stored in DNA and encoded in a form that is nearly universal in all living things on Earth.

What are the key properties of the genetic code? Given that the genomes of all organisms are made up of As, Ts, Cs, and Gs, how does one account for diversity in organisms? What are some factors that could adversely affect diversity in nature?

BIO 410 Wk 3 Discussion – Genetic Mutations

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

In Week Three the readings focused on gene regulation, genetic mutations, and genes in development. During the process of transcription, the genetic code is transferred from DNA to RNA. But what happens when there are mutations in the code?

Our DNA is subject to mutations on a daily basis. Why do most mutations that occur in the genome of organisms escape detection and not elicit a deleterious effect? Why does the child of someone with cancer not necessarily develop cancer? Is it reasonable to state that mutations are essential to the evolutionary process?

BIO 410 Wk 4 Discussion – Genetics of Behavior

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

In Week Four we explored gene development, behavior, and its role at the population level. When investigating genetics scientists frequently use animals as model organisms for their research. This research touches on a wide range of fields, including, including aging, cancer, the immune system, and behavior.

Assume that you discovered Caenorhabditis elegans that crawl significantly slower than others. How would you determine whether this behavior was due to an injury from the environment or to an inherited trait? A goal of using animal models is to explain the molecular detail of specific behaviors encoded in the human brain. How would you compare the developmental biology experiments on memory and learning using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as evidence about the evolution of a human behavior?

BIO 410 Wk 5 Discussion – Ethics of Biotechnology

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

This is the final week of the class, and over the past four weeks you have investigated the mechanisms involved in transferring genetic material and how this can be studied in animal populations. Thank you for working hard and engaging in these discussions. As we conclude the course, this week focuses on biotechnology, including an evaluation of the societal and ethical issues in biotechnology. Scientists at the cutting edge of genetics must weigh the benefits of new technologies with the ethical issues they raise.

Discuss the use of biotechnology and genetic engineering for medical, environmental, legal, and pharmaceutical uses. What are the pros and cons to our society? Why is genetic engineering such a controversial ethical issue? How would you assess the importance of the Ethical Legal Social Implication (ELSI) Program’s impact on the privacy and confidentiality of genetic information, and its implications for medical practice, genetic counseling, and reproductive decision making?
