BIO 350 Wk 7 Discussion – Migration and Change

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member.

Read Ch. 18-20 of Biology.

Due Thursday

Currently, animal populations are experiencing a variety of threats, most of which are related to human encroachment into the natural world. These disruptions cause the animal populations present in those areas to decrease, become isolated and migrate. The concept of punctuated equilibrium as it relates to the evolution of populations is helpful to understand these changes in the natural world.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • Choose a specific animal species (maybe an endangered species in your area or a species that has thrived in proximity of humans) and learn about its phylogenetic history, related species, original range and present-day range.
  • Explain how the concept of punctuated equilibrium could affect the population/species.
  • Describe environmental pressures on the population/species in recent times. Predict the future for the population/species including changes in phenotype and genetic diversity over the next 100 years.

Write in full sentences and in your own words. Direct quotes will not count towards the word requirement or your grade. If you use outside sources provide references in APA format. Course-level sources will be reliable and scholarly. Add a reference in APA format. Rely on scholarly resources in this class.
