Motivation is key when supporting a client who is working to attain and maintain sobriety. This week, you read about motivational interviewing, which is based on one of Rogers’ person-centered core conditions: empathy.

 

Before completing this week’s discussion, review SAMHSA TIP 35: Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Use Disorder Treatment.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • How might motivational interviewing complement your theoretical approach to counseling?

  • When motivating others, how should the counselor and client relationship differ from that of a counselor and a friend?
