COMM 315 Wk 2-Step Outside Observation / Discussion

Select an activity that puts yourself outside of your normal environment to observe others who may be different from yourself.

***I realize that there are more constraints right now. Use these new social constraints to add to your observation and understanding of other people. You might sit in your car and observe people going into stores or getting food. While at a store observe people in line, looking for products they may need and what if someone coughs. You can go to the park and politely observe people.

Even out your window or from a balcony. Be sure to not stare too intrusively and to keep a good distance.

Write a response to include some or all of these questions and share your experience in 150 words or more of good writing:

  • Describe the activity you chose and why?
  • What type of place did you choose to experience and why?
  • What did you observe?
  • What did you find surprising or unexpected?
  • Did you feel comfortable or uncomfortable? Why?
  • Did this experience change your views about the people whom you observed? If so, how?
  • What did you learn from this experience?
  • Prior to this experience, did you have a stereotype of the people you observed in this activity?
  • Identify any social barriers you observed.

Try to observe someone different that you. There are many observable differences in any situation. You can observe someone who is different in age, gender, class, clothing, or other observable differences such as a young parent or older person.

70 Points possible for your response and two reactions to students.

50 points possible for your well written response with good writing and content.

10 points possible (2 in all) for each reply to students to equal 20 points possible. Be sure to add to the discussion with additional observation, insights and even professionally challenging a student to think deeper.

1 response – 50 points

1 response (50 pts) + 1 reply (10 pts) = 60 possible points

1 response (50 pts) + 2 replies (20) – 70 possible points.
