This week, your readings provided an overview of different aspects of counseling in the correctional field, as well as details related to basic skills needed, ethical issues in the field, and cultural issues that may be noted. These are all areas of great importance to review. When reviewing issues within this field, it is important to understand cultural differences that can impact your work. How would you define cultural competence? Why is it so important for counselors to understand the essence of cultural competency, especially within the offender population?
