Databases are made up of sets of data that have a relationship with one another. An entity relationship diagram, more commonly known as an ERD, may be used to visually show the relationships among data sets. There are several symbols used within an ERD that represent various components.

Throughout the next several weeks, you’ll be reviewing and building these diagrams and will have to identify the appropriate visuals. Select one of the five main components of an ERD. Define the component and describe the symbol used in diagrams for your chosen component. Explain why it’s important for the component to be specified.
