As a new teacher, you will definitely be asked to share your philosophy of education. There are many philosophical orientations to teaching and understanding the value of a philosophy of education will enhance your professionalism in a huge way. In addition, a teacher’s practice is guided by knowledge of the legal and ethical responsibilities that teachers have and the professional standards that have been developed to further guide practice.

 

This 2-part assignment combines the important information that teachers need to know into a presentation that a new teacher can save and provides an opportunity for reflection regarding teaching in today’s diverse classroom. Complete Parts 1 and 2 below.

 

Part 1: Philosophies, Ethics, and Standards Presentation

Create an 8- to 10-slide presentation, with detailed speaker notes, that addresses the following:

  • 5 modern philosophical orientations to teaching
  • Define and describe each orientations belief about students, teaching and learning, and knowledge.
  • Psychological orientations
  • Define and describe each orientations influence on teaching practice.
  • Professional Code of Ethics
  • Identify a Professional Code of Ethics and Professional Standards for teachers.
  • Explain why a code of ethics for teachers is necessary.
  • Describe the professional responsibilities of a teacher and which to focus on to be effective.
  • Curriculum and Standards
  • Describe how school curriculum is developed and what influences the process.
  • Explain the role of standards in today’s classrooms.
  • Legal rights and responsibilities as a teacher
  • Explain the legal rights of teachers
  • Explain the legal responsibilities of teachers
  • Legal rights of students and parents
  • Explain the legal rights of students and parents

Include the following elements in your presentation:

  • Title/Introduction slide
  • Slide style that complements content
  • Minimum of 4 functional components (e.g., audio clip, visual graphic, or link)

 

Part 2: Today’s Diverse Classroom Reflection

Write a 1-page reflection about teaching in today’s diverse classrooms that answers the following questions:

  • What do you anticipate will be the most challenging aspect of teaching in a diverse classroom? What strategies might you use to meet that challenge?
  • How will you keep your own bias’s and personal beliefs from negatively influencing your teaching practice?
  • Who might you consult for help with handling any challenges that develop when teaching a diverse student population?
