In Week 1, you will be introduced to the environmental laws of the U.S., and the federal agencies that enforce them. The major areas of regulation are: air and water quality; and, solid and hazardous waste. Environmental laws are created by the U.S. Congress, and approved by the President. They are then enforced through the promulgation of regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency. State and municipal governments also are involved in the enforcement of federal environmental law.

 

Briefly summarize the major sources of environmental law, the litigation (court cases) process, and the way in which environmental agencies enforce environmental law. How are states and municipalities involved in this process? Find your state environmental agency. What is its purpose and major functions?

Identify two significant air-quality problems and two significant water quality problems in the United States. What are the national air-quality standards, and how are they implemented? What are the national water quality standards? How are permits used to control pollutant discharges? What is the state role in relation to these federal requirements?

What is the Energy Policy Act? What is the current President’s approach to energy production, consumption, and conservation? Do you agree with this approach? What is your opinion?
