ENV 420 Wk 1 Discussion – Occupational Risk Assessment

Post a least 3 substantive responses (> 175 words) over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and a minimum of 2 replies to other students and/or your faculty member. Include APA-style references and references in your postings.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

This week of the course presents an overview of risk assessment. Readings, activities, and assignments center on the historical development of the human and ecological risk assessment process as well the ecological risk assessment framework. The field of risk assessment has evolved within both the scientific and regulatory communities. In future weeks we will build on this overview by investigating specific types of risk assessment in more depth.

What are the seminal events in the development of occupational hazard risk assessment? How did ecological risk assessment develop from human and occupational risk assessment science, and what are the main differences between ecological and human risk assessment?

Due Monday

Reply to at least 2 of your classmates and/or faculty member. Be constructive and professional in your responses and make sure these follow-on postings are a minimum of 175 words each.

ENV 420 Wk 2 Discussion – Steps of Risk Assessment

Post a least 3 substantive responses (> 175 words) over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and a minimum of 2 replies to other students and/or your faculty member. Include APA-style references and references in your postings.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

In Week One, we explored an overview of risk assessment. Week Two focuses specifically on environmental elements risk assessment. The reading focuses on the four steps of environmental elements risk assessment, the risk assessment framework, and the application of environmental risk analysis.

Describe the steps of risk assessment. How do these steps differ in human health versus ecological risk assessment?  How might this information be important when considering current events in your daily life?

Due Monday

Reply to at least 2 of your classmates and/or faculty member. Be constructive and professional in your responses and make sure these follow-on postings are a minimum of 175 words each.

ENV 420 Wk 3 Discussion – Occupational Risk Assessment

Post a least 3 substantive responses (> 175 words) over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and a minimum of 2 replies to other students and/or your faculty member. Include APA-style references and references in your postings.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

In Week two, we explored environmental elements risk assessment. This week we move on to occupational risk assessment.  In particular, we examine the application of risk assessment in occupational environments and differentiate the application of risk assessment in occupational and non-occupational environments.

What are the main differences between occupational risk assessment and ecological risk assessment? What is the relationship between occupational risk assessment and public health risk assessment?  How might an understanding of these differences shape the way you interpret information in your daily life?

Due Monday

ENV 420 Wk 4 Discussion – Ecology and Wildlife Risk Assessment

Post a least 3 substantive responses (> 175 words) over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and a minimum of 2 replies to other students and/or your faculty member. Include APA-style references and references in your postings.

Due Thursday

Weeks Two and Three focused on environmental elements risk assessment and occupational risk assessment. This week we move on to explore ecology and wildlife risk assessment. We begin by evaluating how ecological values and human-centered values factor into the assessment of ecological risk.  We then analyze the use of probabilistic assessment methods in predicting ecological risks for environmental contaminants. By predicting risk we can make better decisions to maintain stable ecosystems and prevent the extinction of plants and animals.

How is the risk assessment process for an ecosystem component different from the risk assessment process for human health? What are the three important criteria for determining an ecological assessment endpoint? Why are they important? Which values common to all ecosystems are important in value assessment? Why are they important?

ENV 420 Wk 5 Discussion – Life-Cycle Assessment

Post a least 3 substantive responses (> 175 words) over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and a minimum of 2 replies to other students and/or your faculty member. Include APA-style references and references in your postings.

Due Thursday

This is the final week of the class, and you have been introduced to a variety of forms of risk assessment.  Thank you for working hard and engaging in these discussions.  As we conclude the course, this week focuses on risk management. The reading encourages you to analyze costs and benefits to make decisions based on the economic and social effects of environmental issues. The life-cycle assessment framework provides a tool for identifying and evaluating the environmental and sustainability implications of a product or project. You also learn to manage risks identified in environmental risk assessments.

What is life-cycle assessment? What are the components of the standard four-part approach to life-cycle assessment? Consider an example from your industry. Discuss the potential strengths and limitations of a life-cycle assessment
