ENV 431 Wk 1 Discussion – The Need for Environmental Policy

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
Conduct an online search and review some news broadcasts about current needs for environmental policy. For example, if you search for “environmental policy 2010 video C-SPAN,” you can find the video “Environmental Policy in 2010.”
In that video, participants talk about global environmental policy and the ways in which environmental issues might shape world affairs. If one looks at the history of the environmental movement, they will see there was a media blitz in the late 1960s and 70s that led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and most of the environmental laws in developed countries like the United States. In recent years, there have been highly visible incidents (e.g., the Gulf Oil Spill), and many media discussions of tragic disregard for the environment.
Consider the following questions, and post your thoughts on current media attention to environmental issues:
- Are environmental issues as prominent now as they were in the 1960s and 70s?
- What have been the biggest global threats?
- What events have led to a more concentrated effort on environmental issues?
- What are some approaches that the United Nations has taken toward environmental issues?

Some have argued that clean energy will not only address air pollution issues and the challenges of global climate change, but also economic development in the future. At the same time, there are those who believe stimulated changes in energy policy are one of the largest economic risks to the American economy. What are your thoughts on domestic energy policy? How might U.S. policy changes affect global energy policies and the world economy?

Conduct a search for a video on building healthy corridors. Watch the video from ULI and discuss the infrastructure needed to improve the community. Include at least three (3) economic and health benefits of the corridor for each.
