IT 200 Wk 3 – Point of Sale Data Collection

During your weekly trip to the grocery store, you purchase bread, milk, cold cereal, bananas, and ice cream. The purchase was made using a debit card.

Create a table listing at least 7 data items collected in this transaction and how they are entered into the system.

Note from the Instructor:  What are seven data items? List seven things the store might want to keep track of in their database about each of the food items, like its name, its identifying bar code number, whether it is sold by the pound or by the item, how it should be stored, price, etc. The goods (like bananas or bread) are not the data items, they are the data. Data items are what kind of info the store needs to keep about them.

The table (matrix) should list the products on different rows (bread, milk, cold cereal, bananas, and ice cream – please don’t change them), then the 7 data items you choose across the top columns. Then you can fill in each cell of the matrix.

How they are entered means things like if it’s entered into the database by its barcode being read on the POS system at checkout, or if it comes from the database like when a tax field is calculated, or the total is calculated, or if the cashier has to weight it, etc. Make sure to include an explanation on how it is entered.

Matrix Example (create columns for at least 7 data items that you think the store should track, then fill them in with data):

Data Items >>>> Brand name Barcode # Fill in more>>>
  Bread Wonder 123450001
  Milk
  Cold Cereal
  Bananas
  Ice Cream

Also, add text below the matrix explain how each of the data items were entered into the system (where did they come from?)
