In this first week of PSY/110: Psychology of Learning, we explore personal fulfillment and what success looks like for you. We also take a close look at the role of self-awareness and how to leverage that awareness to keep moving toward your goals. This week’s readings cover the elements for success, benefits of self-awareness, and methods for examining your own personal strengths.

Take a moment to consider your own strengths and how they relate to your personal goals.

  • Consider the elements for success from Ch. 1 of this week’s reading and think about how you define your own success. Which of the elements of success do you feel most comfortable with? Share an example of how you put that element to work. Which of the elements is the most challenging for you and why?
  • One element for success is self-awareness. Self-awareness is the process of reflecting on your strengths, weaknesses, personality traits, behaviors, feelings, thoughts, values, beliefs, etc. It is really getting to know yourself. Why do you think self-awareness is important? How can becoming more self-aware help you reach your goals?

Self-image is how you see and think about yourself—your skills, abilities, successes, failures, etc. Self-esteem is how much you value or respect yourself, including your self-image. Self-acceptance is acknowledging and accepting what is true about you.

Reflect

Consider whether you see yourself in a positive light (self-image). Do you value and respect yourself (self-esteem)? Do you accept the person you are (self-acceptance)? Are you satisfied with the way you see, value, and accept yourself?

In Wk 2, we examined items that can prevent you from reaching your goals and discussed how to avoid procrastination and set priorities. This week, we explore how to set goals, as well as strategies for staying on track to achieve those goals. Your readings will cover SMART goal setting, overcoming obstacles, and stress management.

Each day we encounter challenges big and small. Some problems have easy solutions; others take more time and effort to solve. While there can be other sources of stress, problems are often a primary source. Finding ways to relieve some of that stress as we work to solve problems can be beneficial to our mental and physical health.

Think about the things in your life that cause you stress and some of the challenges or problems you want to overcome.

Take a moment and congratulate yourself—you are in the final week of class!

Over the last 5 weeks, you reflected on what success looks like for yourself, considered how to best manage your time, practiced setting attainable goals, and learned about the importance of self-esteem and positive thinking. In our final week, we examine motivation and self-discipline. Motivation helps drive us toward our goals while self-discipline can keep us on track.

Reflect

Consider what motivates you and how you make decisions that either drive you toward or push you away from your goals.

  • Visualization is a powerful tool to have in your motivation toolbox. For this week’s My Vision Board and Reflection Worksheet assignment, you will take time to visualize your goals, not just the outcome, but each step to get there. Do you see a relationship between the process and practice of visualizing and maintaining motivation? Explain how you perceive the relationship or lack of it.
  • Self-discipline is taking personal responsibility of your willingness and desire to finish tasks and reach your goals. The readings discussed several ways to increase your level of self-discipline. Which of the strategies discussed this week do you think you will use to increase your level of self-discipline in your life? Share a bit about why you think those strategies will work best for you.
