RDG 351 Wk 3 – Emergent Reading Lesson Plan

Create a detailed lesson plan that uses the language experience approach (LEA) as the key instructional piece. You may use the Lesson Plan Template or another format of your choice.

Incorporate the following components into your lesson plan:

  • A phonic or phonemic awareness skill you will target during the lesson
  • At least 1 objective addressing the skill you will be teaching through the language experience approach
  • At least 2-3 sight words you will have students identify and read during the lesson
  • One activity to be implemented during or after the lesson
  • The activity should explicitly teach or reinforce letter identification. Choose 1 or more letters to focus on.
  • The activity should involve the language experience chart created during the lesson.
  • Two activities to be implemented with the whole class after the lesson or in a future lesson
  • One activity should provide further practice with sight/vocabulary words and the other activity should give additional practice with the phonic/phonemic awareness skill taught in the lesson.
  • Each activity should involve the language experience chart created during the lesson.

Reflect on the lesson plan you created and write a 150- to 175-word response to the following questions:

  • How could the language experience approach specifically support struggling readers and English learners who might be in your classroom?
  • How could you differentiate one of the activities used during or after the lesson to fit the needs of struggling readers or advanced readers? Share a specific example.

Note: You may use this lesson plan as part of your Guided Field Experience.
