This week you are introduced to the Western classical music tradition by studying the elements of music. These elements include melody, harmony, rhythm, and texture. Begin to distinguish the elements of music in the music to which you listen by completing one of the assignment options below.

Choose one of the following options for your Week 1 Individual Assignment:

Option A

Refer to the Week 1 Listening Guides: Elements to identify different elements of music.

Choose one song or musical work you enjoy.

Identify at least 2 of the following elements of music in your selection:

• Melody
• Rhythm
• Harmony
• Texture

Describe how the identified elements contribute to your enjoyment of the musical piece by discussing the following:

• What is the individual and overall effect of the elements of music in your chosen song or musical work? In other words, what is the piece’s overall mood?
• What are the characteristics of the elements of music? Are they fast, slow, high-pitched, or low-pitched?
• What is your emotional response to the music?

• A 350- to 700-word paper
• A 3- to 5-minute podcast

ARTS 340 Week 3 A Slice of Life in the Classical Music Era

For your Week 3 assignment, examine key compositions and composers of the Classical period. This is an opportunity for further analysis of the context in which a work of music is created.

Listen to the Listening Guides: The Classical Period to prepare for this assignment.

Select one composition from the Classical period.

Imagine you have gone to a performance of your selected composition in the year and location it was originally performed. What type of audience are you a part of? Describe your experience and include the following:

• Description of how melody, harmony, rhythm, and texture are used in the music of the era of your selected work
• How your experience reflects changes in society and its economy during the Classical period

Submit your assignment as a presentation. You may use a Microsoft® PowerPoint®presentation, a video or another tool with which you are familiar. The presentation should be developed with either 8 to 12 slides or a similar length in another presentation tool.

Include detailed explanations in the Speaker Notes section that correlate to each point if audio is not a part of your assignment.

• Describe what music therapy is, how it is applied, and who your audience is for your proposal.
• Describe the musicians, instruments, and music you hear.
• Indicate what you liked or disliked about the piece of music.

Review Stravinsky’s “Le Sacre du Printemps” and Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun.” Focus on how non-musical artistic disciplines (namely, poetry and visual art) played a role in their creation.

Write a 10- to 12-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation that includes the following:

• A comparison between Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” and Stravinsky’s “La Sacre du Printemps.” How are they different from the music of the Romantic period? How do they reflect the influence of non-musical artistic disciplines (namely, poetry and visual art)?
• A comparison between either “La Sacre du Printemps” or “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” and a song or musical work created since 1970 that was influenced by a contemporary, non-musical artistic discipline (like literature, poetry, film, or visual art). Compare and contrast how each composer used the inspiration of that discipline in their work.
