BIO 101 Week 1 Cell Biology

Option A

Imagine that you are asked to tutor another student on the fundamental concepts of chemistry, the scientific method, and the differences between a plant cell, an animal cell, and a bacterial cell.

Create a 4- to 5-page study guide using Microsoft® Word in which you cover the following:

  • How chemical reactions occur in the body.
  • The purpose of the scientific method.
  • How to develop a hypothesis.
  • How to design an experiment using the scientific method.
  • The primary structures in plant cells, animal cells, and bacterial cells and the role of each structure.
  • How each cell makes energy for cellular processes. Give a brief overview of each energy-making process.
  • What is unique about each cell type.

Note: You may use the Cellular Processes template to create your study guide or you may create your own design.

Cite your sources according to APA guidelines. See the Center for Writing Excellence for more information on using APA style.

Option B

Imagine that you are asked to tutor another student on the fundamental concepts of chemistry, the scientific method, and the differences between a plant cell, an animal cell, and a bacterial cell.

Create a 14- to 20-slide presentation using Microsoft® PowerPoint® in which you cover the following:

  • How chemical reactions occur in the body.
  • The purpose of the scientific method.
  • How to develop a hypothesis.
  • How to design an experiment using the scientific method.
  • The primary structures in each type of cell and the role of each structure.
  • How does each cell makes energy for cellular processes? Give a brief overview of each energy-making process.
  • What is unique about each cell type?

BIO 101 Week 2 Genetics and Reproduction

Create at least a 350-word blog post in Microsoft® Word in response to the following question:

Female copperhead snakes have the ability to reproduce both sexually and asexually. In your opinion, which method is best for the species in general and why?

Develop your opinion andinclude the following in your post:

  • Discuss asexual and sexual reproduction in terms of genetic diversity. How is meiosis related to genetic diversity?
  • Use one of Gregor Mendel’s ideas to support your opinion.

Cite your sources according to APA guidelines. See the Center for Writing Excellence for more information on using APA style.

BIO 101 Week 2 Genetics and Inheritance

Review information on genetic disorders on the National Human Genome Research Institute Site: http://www.genome.gov/.

Choose a genetic disorder that can be inherited from a parent. Write a 525- to 700-word paper on the genetic disorder. Include the following in your paper:

Summarize the Chromosomal Theory of Inheritance and how chromosomal abnormalities can lead to genetic disorders.

  • Describe the relationship between chromosomes and DNA.
  • Identify an example of a genetic disorder and describe the genetic disorder including symptoms, impact on quality of life, and life expectancy. How common is this disorder? Does it run in specific ethnic bloodlines?

Format your paper according to APA guidelines. Review the Academic Writing Guidelines video and the Center for Writing Excellence for additional guidance on academic writing and APA style.

BIO 101 Week 3 Late Nite Labs: Population Genetics

Complete the Population Genetics lab in Late Nite Labs

BIO 101 Week 4 Physiology Test

Imagine you have been asked to teach a small group of your peers about animal organs.

Create 10 multiple-choice questions to test knowledge of the structure and function of animal organs.

Address the functions of each of the following concepts in your test:

  • Differences between asymmetrical, radial symmetry and bilateral symmetry.
  • Differences between endotherms and exotherms.
  • Definition and examples of epithelial tissue. (provide 1 example)
  • Definition and examples of connective tissue. (provide 1 example)
  • Definition and examples of muscle tissue. (provide 1 example)
  • Definition and examples of nervous tissue. (provide 1 example)

Use the Physiology Test Template to complete this assignment.

BIO 101 Week 4 Structure and Functions of Organs

Identify an organism that lives within 50 miles of your home.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper about how the organism has adapted to survive in their specific environment. Include the following points in your paper:

  • Briefly describe the environment (temperature, landscape, food sources, etc.) and describe the organism’s role in the environment. Determine which organism your chosen organism be most closely related to using a phylogenetic tree.
  • Identify the structures and functions of the main organs found in your selected organism.
  • Explain how the organism has evolved physiologically to become suited to its environment.
  • Explain how things would change if the organism were to be transplanted to a significantly different environment:
  • Would their organ system still be as efficient?  Why or why not?
  • Would the organism survive in this new environment?  Why or why not?

Include the diagram and other appropriate pictures in your paper and make sure to provide a full reference for the images in your reference section.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines including references and in-text citations. Your paper should include a well written introduction and conclusion. Use only academic research sources.

BIO 101 Week 5 Environmental Issue

Identify an environmental issue facing your community.

Imagine that you have been asked to educate the members of your community on this environmental issue.

Create a 12- to 14-slide presentation about your selected environmental issue. Include the following in your presentation:

  • An overview of your selected issue.
  • The effects of human activities on your community and the biosphere and how this has led to your chosen issue.
  • The biotic and abiotic environmental components involved in this issue and how their interaction has affected the diversity of organisms in your environment.
  • How energy and materials flow in your local ecosystem and how this is related to your selected issue.
  • Some actions those in your community can take to diminish the issue.
