Part 3

After you have completed Parts 1 and 2 of this worksheet, answer the following question: How do the external structures of the respiratory system coordinate with the internal structures of the respiratory system in the process of respiration?

BIO 335 Week 2 Abiotic and Biotic Factors Paper

The purpose of this assignment will emphasize the biotic and abiotic factors that influence behavior and interactions of insects. You will be able to detail each factor and provide examples as you apply it to a specific species.

Write a 700+ word paper describing how the abiotic–water, temperature, oxygen, and gravity–and biotic factors–other groups of plants and animals–of an insect’s environment affect the growth, decline, or stability of that insect’s population.

Focus on a selected insect species or family from a major terrestrial biome in Ch. 5 of Fundamentals of Entomology.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines. Use the posted grading rubric to guide your work.

BIO 335 Week 3 Identifying Insects Virtual Lab

The purpose of the Identifying Insects Virtual Lab is to demonstrate the process for collecting, preserving, and identifying insects using the taxonomic key.

Access the Identifying Insects Virtual Lab.

Follow the instructions to collect, preserve, identify, pin, label, and display six insects from a grassland biome, a daytime forest biome, or a nighttime forest biome. You will need to take screen shots of each insect after you have completed identifying, pining, labeling all the insects in the biome of your choice. Read the instructions on how to take a screenshot if you need help.

Use the virtual equipment in Ch. 13 and 14 of Fundamentals of Entomology to move through each step in the process.

Label your six insects with the following information:

  • Common name
  • Scientific name or lowest taxonomic level
  • Collection location
  • Date

Submit the virtual display tray of your specimens.

BIO 335 Week 3 Team – Integrated Pest Management Program (IPMP) Paper

The purpose of the Integrated Pest Management Program Paper will evaluate various methods to control household pests including the common chemicals we all use in our homes as well as chemical free methods. In addition, it will reveal the risk and benefits of the methods we use in our homes.

Create a table or diagram identifying ALL of the common pests for the team’s crop (insect and otherwise). What anatomical structures identify each pest? How does each pest damage the chosen crop? On a scale of 1-5, how damaging is each pest? Include an image of each pest. (NOTE: Identifying ALL pests is is for this section/table only. For the rest of the paper, focus on what your team feels is the ONE MOST IMPORTANT INSECT PEST in relation to your chosen crop.)

Develop criteria useful in identifying the (ONE most important) pest that can be effectively used by the crop growers (who may not be entomological experts). Include relevant embryological features and development patterns. This should be designed as a flier, diagram, or classification card that could be passed out to farmers.

Write a 2000-3000 word paper describing your team’s integrated pest management (IPM) program for one of the following agricultural crops: field corn, soybeans, wheat, rice, fruit trees, or vegetable produce, such as carrots, celery, potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce.

Address the following:

  • Identify the common pests for the team’s crop. What anatomical structures identify the pests? What are some similar pests? Are there any invasive pests in the area of your crop? If so, name them and explain if and how they impact your crop.
  • Develop criteria useful in identifying the pest that can be effectively used by the crop growers. Include relevant embryological features and development patterns.
  • Research the population dynamics of the pests as related to the pests’ use of the crop.
  • How do human agricultural practices influence the population dynamics of these pests?
  • What are these pests’ behavioral patterns? Examine how the pests’ behavioral patterns relate to their population dynamics. How can these behavioral patterns be managed in IPM?
  • Are the pests parasites or predators? For each pest, explain how the parasite’s or predator’s mechanism of action differs from those of the crop’s other parasites or predators.
  • Address how the interactions between parasite or predator host affect how susceptible the crop is to the pests and how the interactions may be used as elements of a control program.
  • What methods–biological, genetic, mechanical, physical, and insecticidal–control these pests?
  • What are the risks associated with each method to the grower, consumer, and other organisms in the environment surrounding the fields?
  • What is the team’s recommendation for a control method that balances insect conservation and food production?

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines. Refer to the posted Grading Rubric to guide your work.

TO SUMMARIZE, for this assignment you are submitting a table, a flier/diagram/classification card, and a 2000+ word paper. These should all be put into the same Word document and submitted together as one file.

Note: When approaching Learning Team assignments, equal group work is required. Reference your Learning Team Charter for the details and guidance.

BIO 335 Week 4 Social Systems Paper

The purpose of the Social Systems Paper will address the social systems of insects including the symbiotic relationships such as mutualism, parasitism, and commensalism. In addition, the social systems of the predator insects will be outlined.

Write a 1,000+ word paper analyzing the social system of termites, ants, wasps, or bees.

Address the following topics for the group: generation overlap, division of labor, containment structure,

reproduction, and care of the young.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines. Use the posted grading rubric to guide your work.

Note: For an added resource, you may access websites such as National Geographic® and PBS® to view videos demonstrating the social system of your selected insect.

BIO 335 Week 5 Team – Household Pest WS

The purpose of the Household Pest Worksheet is to evaluate various methods to control household pests including the common chemicals we use in our homes as well as chemical free methods. In addition, it will reveal the risk and benefits of the methods we use in our homes.

Choose a common household pest.

Answer the following questions (with lots of elaboration and details, when possible!) via a Microsoft Word document. You may copy/paste the questions into your document and write your answers onto the worksheet in a different font color to easily distinguish them.

Household Pest Worksheet

Choose ONE common household insect pest and answer the following prompts. Please be detailed when necessary!

  1. What is the common name of your pest?
  2. What is the scientific name of your pest?
  3. In what geographic location is your pest most commonly found?
  4. What food resources does your pest use/eat?
  5. In what part of the household is this pest usually found?
  6. What chemical methods can be used to control the pest?
  7. Which of these methods (from #6) is safest to use around people, kids, pets, etc.?
  8. What chemical-free methods can be used to control the pest?
  9. Which of these chemical-free methods (from #8) seems to be the most effective?
  10. If you had this pest in your own home, how would you control it and why?
  11. Once eradicating the pest, how can people prevent future infestations?
  12. Please copy/paste an image of this pest here:
  13. Please provide a list of at least 3 APA-formatted references that you used for your above answers. Since this is a worksheet and not a paper, there is no need to use in-text citations for this assignment.
