BIO 335 Week 3 Identifying Insects Virtual Lab

The purpose of the Identifying Insects Virtual Lab is to demonstrate the process for collecting, preserving, and identifying insects using the taxonomic key.

 

Access the Identifying Insects Virtual Lab.

 

Follow the instructions to collect, preserve, identify, pin, label, and display six insects from a grassland biome, a daytime forest biome, or a nighttime forest biome. You will need to take screen shots of each insect after you have completed identifying, pining, labeling all the insects in the biome of your choice. Read the instructions on how to take a screenshot if you need help.

 

Use the virtual equipment in Ch. 13 and 14 of Fundamentals of Entomology to move through each step in the process.

 

Label your six insects with the following information:

  • Common name

  • Scientific name or lowest taxonomic level

  • Collection location

  • Date

 

Submit the virtual display tray of your specimens.
