Why is software licensing important to organizations?

One of the toughest decisions for IT departments to perform is to decide if they will develop (build) or purchase software. Software vendors have developed methods of marketing their products such that it may appear that a company will be allocating resources properly toward a particular software package.  If the company is not clear on its expectations and how they intend to establish, maintain and then run the software, the end-users may find themselves dissatisfied and with a system that is useless at worst and one with problems at best.  Another issue is the end-users who will be using the software.

 

End-users can be difficult to entirely satisfy, especially when specifications are not clearly defined or have not been verified and agreed upon in advance. Once we know and agree upon the final technical specifications we encounter the challenges of final selection based on initial and subsequent costs and other factors.

Writing Papers

When writing a paper here is the formula I use. What do I mean by formula? Just that you follow a step-by-step process. Here is an example: Figuring out what you are going to write about; brainstorming and background reading; developing a thesis; creating a first draft; and refining the draft.

As you write be sure to pay attention to the details. Some of those important details include:

1) Grammar;

2) Spelling;

3) Punctuation;

4) Structure;

5) Word usage; and

6) Syntax and semantics.

 

Step one: Prewriting is your draft of thoughts. It is the step where you assemble and organize your ideas so will understand what you are going to write about.

Step two: Create a tentative thesis statement and topic sentences.

Step Three: Do your research and collect supporting information.

Step Four: Write your paper:

Introductory paragraph. A typical Introduction consists of three parts:

  • Motivator – the hook sentence that attracts the reader

  • Thesis – a sentence that states your main idea or belief, which you are to prove and support when writing your essay.

  • Blueprint – a quick review of what you are going to talk about.

Supporting paragraphs. Supporting paragraphs provide facts that prove your thesis.

  • Topic sentence – the one that tells the readers what the paragraph is about. It also has to correspond to your thesis.

  • Supporting sentence. It provides your topic sentence with background support. By doing so, your entire paragraph unfolds and strengthens your essay paper thesis.

  • Concluding statement. The one that signalizes that this paragraph is over. Even though concluding statement summarizes the point, you need to give your reader a smooth shift from one part to another. That’s why paragraph writing has to be wrapped up with a transition sentence – the one that softly introduces a new sub-topic.

Conclusion. A summary of what you have already done. Good essay writing always gives a reader something to think about.

Step Five: Formatting, title page, and references page.

Step Six: Spell-check, proofread, correct and finalize.

It does not matter in what you major, at some point in your career, you will be involved at some level in the design or implementation of an information system where you work. We all need to understand that there are very few off-the-shelf system packages that will meet all the needs without (1) making changes to our business process, or (2) making changes to the package so that it will work with the business’ existing processes. When a business does not come to grips with this when considering a new information system, the system has the potential to fail.

 

Those of us involved need to consider a new information system from three perspectives. (1) The vanilla approach, where the business implements a standard ERP package, using the package’s built-in configuration options. When the system is implemented in this way, it will deviate only minimally from the package’s standardized settings. This can make the implementation quicker, but the extent to which the software is adapted to the organization’s specific processes is limited. (2) The custom approach, where the business implements a more customized system by developing new functions designed specifically to meet their needs. Decisions concerning the degree of the system’s customization are specific to each organization. To utilize the custom approach, the organization must carefully analyze its existing business processes to develop a system that conforms to the organizations particular characteristics and processes. This approach can become expensive and risky because computer code must be written and updated every time the vendor releases a new version. If the customization does not perfectly match the needs of the business, then the system can be very difficult to use. Or (3)?The best of breed approach combines the benefits of the vanilla and customized systems while avoiding the extensive costs and risks associated with complete customization.

 

In the end, no matter what you do in your career, you will come in contact with and more than likely depend on an information system to do your job.

This chapter discusses the various aspects of building long-term customer relationships through Customer Relationship Management (CRM).  Customer relationship management (CRM) is an organizational strategy that is customer-focused and customer-driven.  That is, organizations concentrate on satisfying customers by assessing their requirements for products and services, and then providing high-quality, responsive service.  CRM is not a process or a technology per-se; rather, it is a way of thinking and acting in a customer-centric fashion.  Two major aspects of CRM are operational CRM and analytical CRM. Operational CRM is the component of CRM that supports the front-office business processes.  These processes are those that directly interact with customers; that is, sales, marketing, and service.  Whereas operational CRM supports front-office business processes, analytical CRM systems analyze customer behavior and perceptions in order to provide actionable business intelligence.  The chapter concludes with a look at additional types of CRM, which include mobile CRM, on-demand CRM, and open-source CRM.

CRM is critical to the success of modern businesses as customers are supremely important to all organizations and CRM builds sustainable long-term customer relationships that create value for the company as well as for the customer.  That is, CRM helps companies acquire new customers, retain existing profitable customers, and grow the relationships with existing customers. The customers are the core of a successful enterprise, and the success of the enterprise depends on effectively managing relationships with them, which CRM allows them to perform. Regardless of your particular job, you have either a direct or an indirect impact on your firm’s customers.  Therefore, it is important that you possess a working knowledge of CRM.

IT also has streamlined the process of researching and developing new drugs. Expert systems now help doctors diagnose diseases, and machine vision is enhancing the work of radiologists. Surgeons use virtual reality to plan complex surgeries. They have also used a surgical robot to perform long-distance surgery by controlling the robot’s movements. Finally, doctors discuss complex medical cases via videoconferencing.  New computer simulations recreate the sense of touch, allowing doctors-in-training to perform virtual procedures without risking harm to an actual patient.

Anything but PowerPoint 

Hello All,

As I read the article “Anything but PowerPoint”, the title caught my attention because I am a fan of PowerPoint. Right off the bat it mentioned that there are many other presentation tools that are better than PowerPoint in more ways than one. I agree that Microsoft’s PowerPoint is expensive, but I personally get my money’s worth and I have never been disappointed by the program. In the article there were five alternatives which include: Haiku Deck, Kingsoft Presentation Free 2013, Pixxa, Prezi, and SoftMaker Presentations Mobile. The only one I have experience with is Prezi. I like how it is such a different layout. With the use of Prezi, the presentation is unique, but I believe it is not fitting for every type of situation where a presentation is needed. Does anyone have any experience with any of the alternatives?

In today’s interconnected world we have access to so much information that it is often overwhelming for managers to know where the best data resides, and how to access it. With the advent of sophisticated computer systems, managers can now view a worker’s Internet use by the click of a button.  Managers can see what products are selling and what products are not.  This information can be used to better help management run the day-to-day operations of a business.

It is important for us to understand that there is a great need for managers to understand what is involved with IT because of the interdependence that exists between the business and technology used. Technology is slowly evolving into open systems. This means that industries now expect information technology solutions to be seamlessly interconnected and upgradeable. A good example of this the way the medical industry is having to automate their patient records. Businesses that can upgrade their systems can save millions of dollars not just on equipment costs, but save money by not having to retrain customers or employees on new system interfaces when they are implemented.
