I’ll provide three questions you might get interested in. Please feel free to offer substantive senior level discussion on any of these. The idea is to share from experiences, readings, insights, your jobs… on these topics that are relevant in week 1.

  1. If you were to put together a training or course or group sessions on death and dying, what would you cover, why, and how? Explain a target age group, and the outcomes you hope for by giving the training.
  2. What is bereavement? What does it feel like? How long does it take to go through this? Is it a phase or stage, or a permanent issue? Any discussion is fine.
  3. Did any of the readings stand out to you this week? Would you like to offer a paragraph or so summarizing a reading, and what it meant to you? If so please also give the reference.

Due Monday

Reply to at least 2 of your classmates. Be constructive and professional in your responses.

  1. We read this week that bereavement and loss are not only about death. What sorts of major losses in life do you know about, or have you experienced, that involved deep bereavement – sometimes for a lifetime? We hear a lot about PTSD these days. What other types of losses can be so great that people go into bereavement and PTSD? How would you deal with people over those losses, as a professional?
  2. Share some stories about at least two different kinds of funerals / memorials you have attended. What do you prefer for a funeral – suppose for yourself, or maybe a spouse, a funeral or celebration that you are asked to plan? Tell about the best funeral you have ever attended, and what stood out as a good idea?
  3. Did any of the readings stand out to you this week? Would you like to offer a paragraph or so summarizing a reading, and what it meant to you? If so please also give the reference.

  1. Often our first thought about death is about someone older, in a nursing home perhaps. I work in special ed. It seems every year we lose a student, as some have severe health issues. How might you work with adolescents or children who are not expected to live long? Or with their siblings? Or with their parents? What types of jobs would you have where these situations come up? Has anyone been in this situation? Do you have any advice for others?
  2. Would you deal differently with younger children (elementary) who have lost a loved one, than with adults? What would some differences be? How would talk with children? What types of jobs deal with children who have had losses – siblings, parents, friends? How about kids who lost military parents? Have any of you worked with kids on this? Any advice? And what if the child is adjusting to either the end of a long parental illness, or maybe the worst, a suicide?
  3. Did any of the readings stand out to you this week? Would you like to offer a paragraph or so summarizing a reading, and what it meant to you? If so please also give the reference.

  1. How would you assess a level of threat if someone you are working with professionally, or even a friend or acquaintance, talks about ending it , or suicide, or wishes to die and be gone. Have you lost any friends or family to suicide? What feelings were you left with? How would you help survivors of suicide – those who survived their own, or those who survived after family or friends completed that act?
  2. The textbook readings focused on 9 coping skills. What do you think about those 9 skills? Have you ever used any? Would you use these with others as a helping professional? Would any not work so well in counseling? Any opinions?
  3. Did any of the readings stand out to you this week? Would you like to offer a paragraph or so summarizing a reading, and what it meant to you? If so please also give the reference.

  1. The readings included material on assisted suicide or pulling out plugs on life giving machines. Do you have an opinion on this, or did any thoughts come to you that you might want to share? This is a difficult topic, but it’s here with us.
  2. Suppose you are dealing in a counseling type way with a person of a different faith / belief than you. For example, maybe you believe in an after life, and this person does not, or vice versa. Describe how you would approach the discussion you would have with this person, as you are in a helping profession.
  3. Did any of the readings stand out to you this week? Would you like to offer a paragraph or so summarizing a reading, and what it meant to you? If so please also give the reference.
