CHM 150 Wk 6 Discussion – Closed System

Week 6 Discussion

Here are the discussion topics for Week 6. As long as you otherwise meet all participation rules (see my Instructor Policies), you may respond to only Section A or only Section B, or both sections if you so choose.

Initial participation posts less than 200 words will not be considered substantive. Any follow-up posts, or your initial response to a second section, will need to be at least 100 words. Note that when evaluating word limit, only the main response made in your own words is counted, and not any direct quotes, citations, signature, or anything not directly linked to your post. Additionally, any remarks such as agreement, compliments, restatement, numerical analysis, table, chemical formulas and equations, etc., will also not be considered as part of substantive posts.

Due Thursday: Section 1 OR Section 2

Section 1: polarity

Chemically, how does soap work to remove grease? Give some other related examples.

Section 2: CFCs

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were introduced as refrigerants in the 1930s, replacing other gases that were toxic and corrosive. How do the molecular shape and polarity of CFCs contribute to the many desirable qualities they have as refrigerants? Given that they are such desirable refrigerants, why are they banned? What chemistry is involved? How has their molecular shape and polarity had harmful effects on the atmosphere?

Due Monday:

Reply to at least 2 of your classmates. Be constructive and professional in your responses.
