• As a computer technician, you must be familiar with a wide range of Input/Output (I/O) devices, including keyboards, mice, monitors, biometric devices, projectors, cameras, and video or graphics cards. Before you can attach any of these to a computer system, you must first research which I/O devices and expansion cards are best suited for your computer’s configuration; for example, it is common to find more than one video or graphics card in high-end PCs, especially those that require more than one monitor. In this situation, the graphics cards are needed to handle more graphics, 3D rendering, and gaming applications. This worksheet will help you practice your research skills in finding appropriate I/O devices.

• Appendix J – Mass Storage Devices

• Personal computers are quickly becoming multimedia machines. The demands that multimedia is placing on computers are rapidly filling up all available storage space. As a result, many people have switched to optical storage technology and external mass storage drives. If Moore’s Law holds true, what will happen to computers over the next decade? How will technology keep up with development? How will the information be stored and transmitted over time? How much data storage will we need? How much power will be required to run a personal computer? Most of all, how will you keep up with all the knowledge needed to manage those computers?

• In your office, several employees have been complaining about the need for additional data storage capabilities on their computers, which are the same as the one featured in the Computer Hardware Simulator (CHS). Management has asked you for solutions to the additional storage needs of the employees, after seeing the large file sizes being used in the office; you feel that a DVD-R Dual Layer drive would better serve the employees than the existing DVD-ROMs. You also believe that there is greater value in using external mass storage devices due to future storage needs.

Management has given you a budget of $35.00 per computer. Compare data between internal and external mass storage devices and be prepared to justify your decision to the management.
