Early Childhood Visual Arts Thematic Unit

Develop an Early Childhood Visual Arts Thematic Unit that applies a selected method of visual art production to each of the early childhood developmental levels (infants, toddlers, preschool or pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and early school years [Grades 1–3]). Refer to the University of Phoenix Material: Lesson Plan Template for guidelines on formatting lesson plans. The Visual Arts Thematic Unit should address children’s varied learning styles and developmental needs. Address modifications or accommodations for diverse learners.

Select one of the following methods of visual art production: architecture, ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, or technology and develop at least one thematic art lesson plan for each of the early childhood developmental levels (a minimum of five separate lesson plans). Refer to the University of Phoenix Material: Methods of Visual Art Production for additional information. Integrate the following content areas in your lesson plans as appropriate: literature and language arts, math, science, social studies, music, drama, or movement. The method of visual art production should be the focus of each lesson with the content area serving as the supporting material.

Your unit must include the following:

  1. Theme
  2. National or state standards addressed
  3. Unit learning objectives and outcomes
  4. Learning or resource materials (including technology)
  5. Lesson plans
  6. Student materials or handouts (include technology as appropriate)
  7. Assessments – Include a description and a sample for each assessment as well as rubrics and checklists as appropriate.
  8. Unit reflection – How does your thematic unit facilitate social/emotional, mental, and physical development from infancy through the early school years?

Learning Teams will prepare a 15-minute multimedia presentation (Online and Directed Study students will prepare a 12-15-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation) that provides an overview of the unit and demonstrates one lesson from the unit.

The Early Childhood Visual Arts Thematic Unit and Presentation are due in Week 5.
