ENG 215 Week 1 ‘What is Rhetoric?’ Essay

To establish a foundation for good academic writing you must understand rhetorical context. In this first essay, demonstrate your understanding of what rhetoric is, how it is used in academic writing, and how you see it working in daily interactions, at home or at work. As this is your first essay in your Effective Academic Writing course, all grammar, spelling, and style should be carefully reviewed.

Review your Week 1 Learning Activities.

Write a 350- to 700-word essay on the importance of rhetoric in academic writing that responds to the following:

  • What is rhetoric?
  • What are the factors that define rhetorical context?
  • How can you use rhetorical context to read critically? Discuss one example of academic writing in which you analyze and identify components of the rhetorical context. Choose one of the essays in An Insider’s Guide to Academic Writing, Part Three: Entering Academic Conversations.

ENG 215 Week 2 Presenting Your Case: Week 5 Final Project Topic Rationale

As a part of the Week 5 Persuasive Research Paper and Presentation, this week you submit a topic and present your rationale for its selection. Your topic may be from the following list, or you may ask your instructor for approval on a topic of your choice that argues your personal position on a controversial topic that you think is worthy of public debate. The topic must be current; part of an ongoing debate; or a relatively new, unknown topic that you think deserves more attention, such as:

  • The role of innovation in the marketplace
  • How corporations can serve the cause of social justice
  • Gender-based income gap
  • The impact of disposable products and packaging in the marketplace and on the environment
  • The role of media in shaping public opinion
  • Alternative approaches to public school education
  • Stereotyping the millennial generation
  • The emerging dangers of climate change

Refer to the Opposing Viewpoints database available in the library for assistance in selecting a topic.

Write a 350-word paper in which you describe your focused topic, the rationale for choosing the topic, and the main supporting points of your proposed argument.

Include responses to the following in your paper:

  • What types of rhetorical appeals will you make to argue your position?
  • What other basic elements of an argument will you use?
  • What is an example of an argument you can make for your paper? Identify the claims, evidence, counterargument, and rebuttal you can use.

Review your paper for effective use of basic English grammar, word usage, and sentence style before turning in your paper.

Format your paper consistent with appropriate course-level APA guidelines.

Submit your paper to the Assignment Files tab.

ENG 215 Week 2 Annotated Bibliography

At this point, you must determine the validity and quality of your research sources. In this assignment, you are listing the sources you have identified as potentially supportive of your argument for your Week 5 Persuasive Research Paper and Presentation. However, this annotated bibliography is more than a list of resources. Each source must be listed in correct APA format and be accompanied by a brief, evaluative summary. By writing these summaries, your annotated bibliography helps you evaluate the credibility and relevance of your sources in shaping and supporting your argument. The skills of paraphrasing and summarizing are foundational for any research writer. This assignment will prepare you for research projects and literature reviews in college, as well as in your career.

Conduct several searches using any of the databases in the library related to the topic about which you want to write.

Select four to seven scholarly, academic sources from the library search that support the topics and arguments you plan to present in your final paper. These sources should be peer-reviewed articles.

Review the Annotated Bibliography document for format. For example, you will see that the bibliography should contain correctly formatted APA-style entries, and includes a one-paragraph evaluative summary of each item in at least three sentences.

Write a four- to seven-item annotated bibliography for your Week 5 Persuasive Research Paper and Presentation.

Review the How to Use the Citation Generator for an Online Database Journal Article and the Reference and Citation Generator, located in the Center for Writing Excellence for assistance with APA formatting.

Include a title page formatted using APA style

Submit your annotated bibliography to the Assignment Files tab.

ENG 215 Week 3 Prewriting, Outline, and Thesis Statement Worksheet

All effective essays are organized around a central claim or thesis statement that must be supported by reasoning, factual evidence, examples, testimony, and related research. Your “working” thesis is a draft that will need to be refined and tweaked as you revise the paper. As you conduct more research and formulate ideas, keep an open mind; do not hesitate to revise your argument, or thesis, as you deem necessary. Remember that a thesis statement is typically a single, complex sentence that captures your claim and essential qualifiers or reasons. It essentially answers your research question.

Review your Week 3 Learning Activities.

Complete the Prewriting Worksheet as a way to help you organize your thoughts about your argument as your prepare for your Week 4 draft and Week 5 final paper.

Use complete sentences and source information within the outline using in-text citations.

Submit your worksheet to the Assignment Files tab.

ENG 215 Week 4 Draft of Week 5 Persuasive Research Paper

At this stage, you are ready to streamline your argument into a coherent and readable draft. The skills of drafting and revising will serve you well in the future, no matter where your career might take you. All disciplines depend on the evaluation and dissemination of information, which in turn depend on the process of research, drafting, and revision. Great care must be taken to refine your thesis statement and check the relevance and unity of each paragraph in the essay. These are the essential links in your argument, which will reach its final shape next week.

Use your working thesis, outline, and list of citations to assemble your draft. Read it aloud to yourself or to someone you trust. This will help you make adjustments in the logic and flow of your draft.

Review instructor feedback on your Week 1 to Week 3 assignments.

Write a 1,400- to 1,750-word draft of your paper, based on the topic you selected, your research in Week 2, and your thesis and outline from Week 3. Ensure that you do the following while drafting your paper:

  • Review the relevance, reliability, and objectivity of your sources.
  • Revise thesis statements and topic sentences as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate effective summarizing and paraphrasing of your sources.
  • Use a minimum of four peer-reviewed sources.

Note: If you are writing on a topic that is part of an ongoing debate, your argument must address all sides of the issue, and must represent and persuasively respond to positions different from your own.

If you are writing on a relatively new or unknown topic, part of your task will be educating your readers on this topic and proving that it is worthy of serious public debate.

Review your essay for effective use of basic English grammar, word usage, and sentence style before turning in your paper.

Format your paper consistent with appropriate course-level APA guidelines.

Submit your paper to the Assignment Files tab.

ENG 215 Week 5 Persuasive Cover Letter and Resume

In today’s business environment, workers and managers view changing jobs as a normal means of career progression and self-development. Informal preparation for job hunting in your area of study should start soon after you begin your degree program. Ideally, formal preparation for job-hunting, including creating a persuasive cover letter and resume, should begin at least a full year before you begin interviewing.

Keep in mind that most employers will skim resumes to select candidates that stand out from the pack. Employers assume that the letter and resume represent your best work. Therefore, a resume and cover letter must accomplish the following:

  • Describe the value you bring to your future employer.
  • Deliver essential details concisely to appeal to a busy manager.
  • Reflect your understanding of the company’s priorities and the requirements of the job.
  • Emphasize your competitive strengths, qualifications, and leadership qualities.
  • Use a winning tone. Avoid sounding self-important or entitled.
  • Support your list of previous employment with specific duties/tasks and accomplishments.
  • Use your cover letter to describe why you would be a good fit and how you plan to be an asset to the organization.

Remember, a convincing cover letter secures an interview, so present yourself as the best candidate for the job.

Use any resume format you think is appropriate.

Write a cover letter (approximately 350 words) and a one-page resume that will ensure you get an interview.
