ENG 230 Week 3 Commonly Confused Words
For your Week 3 assignment you will once again choose a new topic on which you have not previously written. Think of this assignment as an opportunity to demonstrate correct usage of commonly confused words to reduce the likelihood of future mistakes in your academic or professional writing. Continue to demonstrate proficiency with the mechanics of writing covered in previous weeks.
Write a 350- to 700-word paper on one of the following topics:
- Your favorite hobby or activity
- Your career goals
- Your solution to a problem at work
- Another topic of your choice with faculty approval
Choose a topic you did not choose to write about in Week 1 or Week 2.
Demonstrate the correct usage of every word below at least once in your paper. The word sets need not appear in the same sentence; i.e., you may use “your” in your first sentence and “you’re” in your fifth.

- Its/it’s
- Who/whom
- Then/than
- Effect/affect
Ensure that none of your sentences are fragments, run-ons, or comma splices.
Demonstrate proper subject/verb agreement and verb tense consistency.
Review each sentence to ensure pronoun/antecedent agreement.
Review your paper to correct any other grammar errors prior to submission.
Format your assignment according to appropriate course-level APA or MLA guidelines set by your instructor in the course syllabus.
