ENG 295 Wk 2 Discussion – Illustrations

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 200 words and use at least one example from the required readings – Post a total of 3 substantive responses.

Children’s literature is often enhanced by the use of illustrations. In fact, some children’s literature could be described as more image than narrative. The use of imagery in literature can highlight important concepts within the story.

Think about your favorite picture book. Is it part of the canon of children’s picture books?

How would your feelings about this book be different if there were no pictures? How do the images enhance the story and your understanding of it?

Who’s the boss?

  • What if someone told you can only read these books and not these others?
  • What if every reading choice was not a true choice?
  • What if the government committees picked the books for you? What if your parents picked for you?
  • What if librarians and teachers were the ones picking everything you read?
  • What if they decided not only you can’t read a book but no one can (look up banned or challenged books)?

Well, with children’s literature, everyone is “The Boss” but the child. How does that impact a child’s life? What are the pros and cons?
