The United States, is often referred to as the melting pot; a place where individuals can live and practice their cultural beliefs. However, there might be some misconceptions. Week 1 sets the foundation for our class discussion on cultural diversity. Race, ethnicity, and stereotypes related to cultural diversity will be address this week. As we begin the week, consider what cultural diversity means.

To begin your discussion, provide a brief description of what living in a multicultural society means to you? What would it be like if we did not live in a multicultural society?

  • Citizens of the United States sometimes experience xenophobia (fear of strangers or foreigners). When were you first aware of yourself as a member of a particular racial or ethnic group and was there a time that you realized that you would be treated differently because of your race or ethnicity? Discuss some ways to reduce this fear of xenophobia.

During Week 1, our discussion focused on diversity and stereotypes. This week, we will further explore the issue of discrimination. Each of us has likely witnessed or experienced some form of discrimination or stereotyping based on race, ethnicity, gender, or even religious beliefs. Take a moment to consider the concepts of stereotype, discrimination, and prejudice.

In your own words, provide definitions for the terms stereotype, discrimination, and prejudice. What are some real-world examples that you have seen in either your personal life, in the news, or in the media about how these words are used?

  • What do you see as the primary reasons for prejudice and discrimination?
  • How is discrimination also in the fabric of our social institutions including our educational, criminal justice, housing, health care, and employment systems

To appreciate the significance of cultural diversity, it is important to understand the history associated with different racial and ethnic groups. Understanding past and current social injustices can shed light on how to improve the future. Take a moment to consider what you know about social inequalities among various racial groups.

Select one of the groups listed below (taken from your reading this week):

  • Native Americans
  • African Americans
  • Latinos
  • Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans
  • Muslim and Arab Americans
  • Asian Americans

ETH 120 Week 4 Discussion – Discrimination protections

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

In Week 3, our focus was on social injustice related to race or ethnicity. In Week 4, our discussion will move to discrimination practices associated with often marginalized groups, such as women, LGBTQ, disabled individuals, and older age groups. There are policies and laws in place to protect the rights of people in these groups and reduce discriminatory practices related to gender, sexual orientation, and age.

Answer one of the two prompts:

1) The women’s and feminist movements have been somewhat successful; women have gained access to high-ranking and high-paying jobs in many industries and fields. Are there still issues for women in the workforce? If so, what are they and what changes still need to occur? If not, what do you think made the movements so successful?

2) Since gay marriage was legalized in 2015, has there been reduced prejudice and discrimination against the LGBTQ community? What examples of discrimination still exist that impact the LGBTQ community on both a large and small scale?

As you move into this final week of class, take a moment to reflect on the aspects of cultural diversity you encountered during previous weeks. This week, you are asked to discuss the significance of cultural diversity in the United States. Exploring the benefits and limitations to diversity practices requires awareness of what diversity means, both locally and world-wide.

The concept of the American Dream is that anyone who works hard enough will be rewarded – that anyone can pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Is the American Dream still attainable in 2019 and is it achieved the same way for all people? How do we ensure a society that is grounded in equity?

  • What do you see as some of the benefits of the diversity in the United States?
  • What are some of the biggest challenges? Provide specific examples for each.
