Welcome to Week 2! This week, we continue to build strategies and ways of thinking than can contribute to helping you achieve your goals. In particular, adopting the concepts of “grit” and “growth mindset” can change the way we deal with difficulties and setbacks. Embracing these mindsets can be a critical factor in your personal, academic, and professional life. As you learn about long- and short-term goals this week, consider the importance of “grit” and “growth mindset” in achieving those goals.

 

Before responding to this week’s discussion questions, reflect on the reading, and be sure to watch the videos that talk about these concepts.

How do “grit” and “growth mindset” relate to one another? Provide at least one example of how you might use grit or growth mindset as you pursue your goals. In addition to using these skills, how can managing your time effectively help you achieve your goals, in this class and beyond?

In the past 2 weeks, you explored strategies for overcoming challenges, considered how to use grit and growth mindset, looked at efficient time management, and set some goals. This week focuses on communication.

Communication skills are critical in college and in the workplace. Communication is essential to the online learning experience, but communicating in an online format can present challenges in classroom discussions and in written assignments.

 

Take a few moments to think about how communication in the classroom differs from casual communication with friends and family. Also consider how communication online differs from face-to-face communication.

Share one or two examples of challenges you have encountered communicating in the online environment. What do you think caused those challenges?

In Week 3, we addressed the importance of effective communication. This week, we expand that discussion to talk about information literacy. Information literacy means knowing how to find, evaluate, and use information appropriate to your purpose. Not all information is reliable, and part of communicating effectively is being able to identify and use trustworthy information.

 

Consider all the different places you get information – social media outlets, online news publications, discussions with friends, magazines, text books, television, etc.

Why do you think time is spent in this class learning about information literacy? Provide one or two examples of when and why information literacy would be valuable, in either an academic or professional situation.
