HST 155 Week 5 Territorial Expansion and Slavery

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the required questions.  Use the course materials, but in addition, you can use outside sources.  You are required to use at least the textbook to complete this assignment.

• As new states were admitted and new territories acquired, how did Congress deal with the issue of slavery with the Missouri Compromise?
• Why did Congress run into a number of problems related to slavery as a result of the newly acquired territories from the Mexican American War?  How did the Compromise of 1850 fail to solve them?
• Identify at least two other specific events that took place in the 1850s (other than the Compromise of 1850 and its components). How did each of the events lead the country toward civil war?
