HST 165 Wk 1 Discussion – The Reconstruction

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

The America Reconstruction was a period of turmoil following the Civil War. President Lincoln planned reunification of the southern states as soon as possible, but was faced with resentment from Southerners in reaction to Union control and equality. Along with desperate economic conditions and a culture of white supremacy, a backlash of violence targeting freed slaves and supporters contributed to the failure of Reconstruction.

Discussion Questions: Consider the political, economic, and social environment of the South following the Civil War. What laws were enacted, amendments ratified, and organizations created to support freed slaves? In your opinion, were these effective? What effect did the presidency of Andrew Johnson have on Reconstruction?

HST 165 Wk 2 Discussion – Industrial Workers

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

Industrialization began in Great Britain in the mid-19th century and spread quickly to North America. Steam and electric power increased the efficiencies of machines, and new inventions improved daily life. A population shift occurred in response to workers moving to urban areas to find employment. Immigration, in addition to this urban industrialization, contributed to the rise of large American cities.

Discussion Questions:

Consider the working and living conditions of industrial workers, including women and children. How did these conditions support the growth of labor unions? What other issues contributed to worker dissatisfaction? The rise of organized labor unions was marked by violence and vandalism. Thinking about the strikes and attempts at unionization, why were workers unable to gather widespread public support for their strikes? What was the role of government in relation to labor unions and workers?

The Progressive Movement fundamentally changed America and the role of government. In what ways did this damage the country as a whole?

HST 165 Wk 3 Discussion – America and World War I

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

In April 1917, the United States declared war on Germany. The American public was reluctant to become involved in the European war due to potential loss of life; however, neutrality became difficult to maintain when travel across the Atlantic Ocean was affected. President Wilson was opposed to American intervention in the affairs of other countries; however, he found it exceeding difficult to maintain this position when his moral foreign policy continued to fail.

Discussion Questions:

What key factors forced Wilson to declare war? Considering the events that led to the United States entering the World War, do you agree that it was necessary? Why or why not? What were the effects of World War One on Americans at home? What changes in society, economics and politics did the end of the war bring?

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

The decade of the 1920s was a time of great prosperity in America, and the country saw the beginnings of consumerism and social change. When President Hoover was elected in 1928, he foresaw a country with a bright future and did not expect the economic downturn that came shortly after his inauguration.

Discussion questions:

Although the stock market crash in October 1929 is one obvious cause of the Great Depression, there were many underlying causes. What were these, and how did they contribute to the financial decline? What were the major consequences of the Depression? Did FDR’s actions benefit or hurt the country’s recovery overall?

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

In Week Three of this class, we discussed American reluctance to become involved in World War I, and this week we identify that same reluctance to enter a European war with Hitler. President Roosevelt initially refused to help Jews fleeing German oppression. In the 1930s, the United States adopted a policy of appeasement toward Germany.

Discussion questions:

Why do you think the United States and its European allies adopted this policy of appeasement?

Pearl Harbor was attacked in December 1941, and the United States entered the war immediately. Do you think America would have entered World War II eventually, even without the attack on Pearl Harbor? Why or why not?

How do you think the bombing of Pearl Harbor affected a future decision to use the atomic bomb on Hiroshima? Do you believe there was a connection? Why or why not?
