HUM 105 Week 1 Foundations of Mythology

This week was an introduction to mythology and how it is viewed in popular culture and academically. The activities this week have focused on myths in different cultures around the world. In this assignment you will share what you learned.

Write a 600- to 875-word paper in which you answer the following questions:

  • How is the word myth used in popular culture? For example, what does the statement, “It’s a myth” mean? In contrast, how is the word myth used in the academic context? After considering the definition in your textbooks and course materials, write a definition in your own words.
  • What are the most common mythological themes across different cultures?
  • Why do myths from different cultures around the world address such similar or universal themes? Do we see these same themes in today’s myths? Think about how myths explain the unknown and the tribulations of humankind.

  • Why is there such a focus on cosmic occurrences or natural phenomena like stars, moons, floods, rain, etc.?
  • Compare the creators, creations, the steps or cycle of creation, and the cosmic elements of the two myths. What are the similarities and differences?

Prepare a presentation about a sacred place in mythology. For example, the Oracle at Delphi or the Mahabodhi Temple. This place may or may not currently exist. • How do these places or things connect to mythological stories from that culture?
    • What is the role of place and the associated objects?

  • A list of the most important facts to know about the surrounding culture, as well as etiquette and dress to follow when visiting, and, most importantly, what these details tell us about the culture that gave rise to the myth
