  • What is a hero? What can he/she do that ordinary people cannot?
  • Choose a contemporary story from the news, a novel, television or movie that is inspired by a mythological epic or hero’s quest. Describe the behavior of the main character and the feat(s) he or she has or must execute for the benefit of society in the face of challenges.
  • Identify the villain and describe his or her characteristics and role in the hero’s quest.
  • Explain the conflicts between personal desires and community responsibilityrepresented in the story. What sacrifices does the hero make in personal life? Relate these to the conflicts and choices with which ordinary humans struggle.

ALTERNATE PP ASSIGNMENT: TRICKSTERS

In a 10-16 slide PowerPoint presentation, describe a trickster of your choice, either in Mythology, real life, movies or cartoons. Please do not choose a character from electronic games since we may be familiar with him or her. You may choose to present your PowerPoint to the class for extra credit.

  • Who is the trickster and where can he or she be found/
  • What makes the character a trickster?  Be specific.
  • What characteristics of tricksters does this character have?
  • What are the motives?  Helping someone, enriching self, adventure, self-protection? Are the motives ethical and fair?
  • Have you ever met a trickster in real life?  What happened?
