Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days to earn full participation points.

This total includes:

Words can have different meanings in different contexts, and that is the case with the word critical. Using a shared definition makes discussion more productive, so to begin, this week we define what is meant by critical thinking. Sometimes, the word critical means being picky. It can also mean that something is important, as in “that is a critical part of this machine.” However, neither of those definitions reflects the meaning of critical as it is used in the phrase critical thinking.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • Based on this week’s reading and activities, how would “you” define critical thinking?
  • What are some characteristics of a critical thinker, and what do you see as common barriers to critical thinking? (Boss, p.21)
  • How might people overcome or avoid those barriers?
  • What, in particular, in the reading assignments this week expanded your ideas about critical thinking?

Due Monday

Reply to at least 2 of your classmates or any message/question from your Instructor. Please be constructive and professional in your responses. Each reply must have at least 175 words of substantive content.

Due Thursday

You make dozens of choices and decisions each day, often without being consciously aware of them. Because critical thinking may be more rigorous than “everyday” thinking, it is important to recognize some factors that can influence the effectiveness of critical thinking, including reason, communication, and emotion.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • Take a moment to consider how you approach making important decisions. Provide an example of a situation where emotion influenced your decision-making. Did you feel the decision you made was a reasonable one? What role did emotion play in this example? Did communication play a role, as well? If you had removed emotion from your decision-making, how might your decision have changed?

Due Monday

Reply two times to either messages posted by classmates or messages from your instructor. Be constructive and professional in your responses.

HUM 115 Wk 3 Discussion – Bias, Fallacy, and Assumption

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days to earn full participation points.

This total includes:

  • your initial response
  • plus any combination of 2 replies to other students or to any messages/questions from your Instructor

All three responses must have at least 175 words of substantive content to earn full credit. Please demonstrate learning in your responses.

Due Thursday

In the first weeks of this course, you learned about factors that can affect how effective critical thinking is. This week, you learn about bias, fallacy, assumption, and ambiguous communication. These elements often come into play when someone tries to convince someone else to agree with them.

Recall a time when you wanted to get someone to agree with you. Did you support your beliefs with facts? Did you perhaps leave out key details, bring in unrelated ideas, or become overly emotional to make your case?

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

Share two brief examples of arguments in which you or someone else relied on bias, fallacy, or assumption to persuade someone else. These examples can be from social media, from work situations, or other instances. Identify where bias, fallacy, or assumption is used in the argument. Based on your knowledge of critical thinking, how might those arguments have been adjusted to use reason and critical thinking?

Due Monday

Reply to at least 2 of your classmates. Be constructive and professional in your responses. All responses must be at least 175 words of substantive content. Demonstrate what you have learned and your ability to apply it personally, academically and professionally.

HUM 115 Wk 4 Discussion – Arguments

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days to earn full participation points.

This total includes:

  • your initial response
  • plus any combination of 2 replies to other students or to any messages/questions from your Instructor

All three responses must have at least 175 words of substantive content to earn full credit. Please demonstrate learning in your responses.

Due Thursday

Every day we are a party to arguments. This is another instance where defining our words is important. When we talk about critical thinking, the “arguments” we refer to are not the conflicts or squabbles we have with others in our daily interactions. In our discussion of critical thinking, arguments are the acts of persuading others about the value of an action or point of view. Whether we are trying to convince someone else or they want us to agree with them, this exchange, or argument, is a place where the use of critical thinking is beneficial.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

This week you found that there are different classifications of arguments. How do inductive and deductive arguments differ? To what extent do you use logic in general conversation? Give an example of how the use of logic and structure could affect some of your personal relationships or communications.

Due Monday

Reply to at least 2 of your classmates. Be constructive and professional in your responses. All responses must be at least 175 words of substantive content. Demonstrate what you have learned and your ability to apply it personally, academically and professionally.

Welcome to Week 5 and congratulations! Our discussions have been thoughtful, practical, productive, and possibly life-changing! We started the course reflecting on how we formulate opinions and beliefs. We then expanded the concept of critical thinking to include consideration of how we relate to friends, family, and other personal situations. This week we look at a broader scope – marketing and advertising, mass media, law and politics. Quite a bit of new learning – and reading! Our first chapter discusses marketing and advertising, so get started with that reading and we will begin our conversation with those topics. I will add additional discussion topics during the week, as you have the opportunity to finish your readings.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

I think we have all been drawn in by advertising at one time or another. Boss writes:

Advertisements can manipulate us into buying a product that we neither need nor would have wanted before being exposed to the advertisement. Rather than using reason, these ads appeal to our emotions through fallacies, rhetoric, and emotionally laden language and images (p.318).

Please take a look at the section of the ebook – Evaluating Advertisements – starting on page 318. Consider the examples of fallacies, rhetoric, language and imagery we see and hear.

Think about a recent purchase you made. Which of the many elements of advertising described by our ebook author caused you to make the decision to purchase a product?

Please do not discuss the item itself, for example, I bought the shoes because I was looking for blue shoes, or I bought the phone because of the features of the camera. Think about elements of advertising for the product you purchased and consider how these affected your decision to purchase.

I am looking for a demonstration of your understanding of advertising techniques and how these affect our critical thinking. We are not evaluating products.
