You make dozens of choices and decisions each day, often without being consciously aware of them. Because critical thinking may be more rigorous than “everyday” thinking, it is important to recognize some factors that can influence the effectiveness of critical thinking, including reason, communication, and emotion.

• Take a moment to consider how you approach making important decisions. Provide an example of a situation where emotion influenced your decision-making. Did you feel the decision you made was a reasonable one? What role did emotion play in this example? Did communication play a role, as well? If you had removed emotion from your decision-making, how might your decision have changed?
