HUM 150 Wk 1 Discussion – Art Vs. Entertainment

Post a total of 3 substantive responses spread over at least 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post to this Discussion Topic and 2 replies to either your instructor’s replies or the posts of other students. NOTE: You will not be able to see the posts of others until you post your initial response.

Due Thursday

For your initial post, respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words. You may discuss just one of these, or any combination of them. Your response must address at least one of these topics.

_As we begin our adventure in studying film, let’s take some time to get to know about each other’s tastes in movies. What are your three favorite films? Do you have a top favorite amongst those three? Discuss why you like it or why you like all three.

_One of the videos under “Wk 1 – Learning Activities,” “Week 1 University Library,” is entitled “Hollywood’s Role in Shaping Values.” Take a look at that and discuss how it is that you feel movies influence society and culture. Can you think of a film that has changed the way you see and act in the world, or that you think has had a profound influence in our society and culture? Discuss how it influenced your values or behavior or the values or behavior of society and culture.

_Another of the videos under “Wk 1 – Learning Activities,” “Week 1 University Library,” is entitled “The Importance of Storytelling.” Check that out and discuss what you think constitutes a great film story. Would you consider any of the films you have recently watched to have great storytelling? Why or why not? Try to be specific.

_Name the stages of producing a film. Pretend you are going into the film business. Choose the phase you would most be interested in, describe what happens in that phase, and then discuss the role you would like to work in and tell us why.

Due Monday

Post at least two responses. These can be to your classmates’ initial posts or responses, or to replies posted by your instructor. Be constructive and professional in your responses. 50 words minimum each.

HUM 150 Wk 2 Discussion – Elements of Cinematography

Post a total of 3 substantive responses spread over at least 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post to this Discussion Topic and 2 replies to either your instructor’s replies or the posts of other students. NOTE: You will not be able to see the posts of others until you post your initial response.

Due Thursday

For your initial post, respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words. You may discuss just one of these, or any combination of them. Your response must address at least one of these topics.

_ Describe how elements of cinematography such as angles, shot size, color and lighting establish mood in a film of your choice?

_ How does a film’s editing contribute to its success or failure in the mind of the viewer? Have you ever seen an “editor’s cut” or “director’s cut” of a film? Why do you think the editor’s or director’s cut was not in the original version? Do you think the movie would have been better if it had been?

_ Music and musical scores are often used to elicit an emotional response from the audience. Think of a movie in which the music affected you emotionally, for example Jaws (Steven Spielberg, 1975) or Sleepless in Seattle (Nora Ephron, 1993). How were you affected negatively or positively by the music?

_ Imagine you are a character in a teenage slasher horror movie or a Western. What sounds do you hear? What sounds do you not hear, but the audience does? From these, discuss how sound manipulates audience reactions in horror films or Westerns. Name some other characteristics one finds in all horror movies or Westerns. How do they contribute to the film being a horror film or a Western?

HUM 150 Wk 3 Discussion – The Narrative

Post a total of 3 substantive responses spread over at least 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post to this Discussion Topic and 2 replies to either your instructor’s replies or the posts of other students. NOTE: You will not be able to see the posts of others until you post your initial response.

Due Thursday

For your initial post, respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words. You may discuss just one of these, or any combination of them. Your response must address at least one of these topics.

_Choose a film that you consider to have a particularly interesting or good storytelling structure. Discuss the structure of that film, and what you find interesting about it. Alternatively, discuss a film that you find uses a particularly good or interesting perspective or point of view in the way it tells the story of the film. Discuss the film’s genre. What are the conventions of that genre? What is it about that particular genre that appeals to you?

_Author Stephen King is listed as one of the great storytellers of our time. He’s considered a key figure in the horror genre, but has written very popular works in other genres as well. Why do you think so many of his works have been made into films? In other words, what key aspects of his narratives translate well to the big screen?

_Many science fiction films are set in a dystopian future (meaning a future that is frightening and oppressive). Can you think of any film examples? (hint: Hunger Games is one). What types of stories are typical of these films? What would you do to break the mold in this type of film?

_In some instances, genres overlap each other, as in Zombieland or Shaun of the Dead. In your opinion, do you think these movies fall into an existing genre, such as horror or comedy? If so, which one do they fall into? Why did you select this genre? If not, how would you define the genre? What would you call it? Did a film like this make you laugh? Analyze the type of humor you responded to–was it slapstick, situational, dark, or another type of comedy?

_After viewing the video on Francis Ford Coppola under “Wk 3 – Learning Activities,” “Week 3 University Library,”, consider that a typical romance storyline usually follows the formula: boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-wins-girl-back. What are examples of romance movies where you see this formula? What are examples of romance movies that deviate from this formula? Can they still be considered a part of the romance genre? Why do you think so?

HUM 150 Wk 4 Discussion – Global Cinemas

Post a total of 3 substantive responses spread over at least 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post to this Discussion Topic and 2 replies to either your instructor’s replies or the posts of other students. NOTE: You will not be able to see the posts of others until you post your initial response.

Due Thursday

For your initial post, respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words. You may discuss just one of these, or any combination of them. Your response must address at least one of these topics.

_Some of the trends in global cinema that are discussed in Chapter 12 of our text arose in an effort to address the struggles of a society at the time, make political statements, or effect social change. Many of them were considered controversial at the time. Discuss examples of more recent films you have seen that you believe address controversial issues, make political statements, or attempt to effect social change, in direct or indirect ways.

_Consider some of the global cinemas discussed in Chapter 12, older and newer, such as German Expressionism, Soviet Silent Film, French Impressionist Cinema and Poetic Realism, Italian Neorealism, French New Wave, Japanese Cinema, or Hong Kong Cinema, etc. Which of these might you be most interested in seeing some films from, and why? Or perhaps tell us if you have seen a film from any of these, and what you found interesting or different about it.

_Our materials under “Wk 4 – Learning Activities,” “Week 4 University Library” and Chapter 12 discuss films made in a variety of times and places. Much of how films are perceived has to do with the context of both when and where they were made, as well as when they were seen, and by whom (and in what culture they live). How important is a film’s context to its overall effect? If a film is watched out of context, do you think its meaning would be lost? For example, think of a movie from the decade you were born or another film of your choice, as long as it is at least 10 years old. If the movie was watched now, would it be viewed differently? If so, how?

_After watching “Development of the Antihero” under “Wk 4 – Learning Activities,” “Week 4 University Library,” discuss a main character in a more recent film you have seen that you consider to fit into the antihero mold. How about a more recent character you consider to be a true classic hero and not an antihero?

_After watching “Film History: New Inspiration,” under “Wk 4 – Learning Activities,” “Week 4 University Library,” discuss what you feel might be new inspirations for movies today, what ideas you think might reinvigorate genres such as horror, sci-fi, westerns, action films, romance, or any other you think might need reinvigorating. For example, horror films have a long history in Hollywood beginning with Dracula and Frankenstein, whose source materials came from original published novels. Dracula can be thought of as a folktale and Frankenstein was, in part, inspired by science experiments known to the author Mary Shelley. What folktales or current scientific thought should serve as inspiration to modern filmmakers?

HUM 150 Wk 5 Discussion – Critical Analysis

Post a total of 3 substantive responses spread over at least 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post to this Discussion Topic and 2 replies to either your instructor’s replies or the posts of other students. NOTE: You will not be able to see the posts of others until you post your initial response.

Due Thursday

For your initial post, respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words. You may discuss just one of these, or any combination of them. Your response must address at least one of these topics.

_How has this class changed the way you will watch films? Describe your new approach to movie appreciation.

_In Chapter 11 we learned about different methods to use in writing a critical analysis. We have also learned a bit about a major classical film theory called Realism, which calls for realistic or even naturalistic depiction of events on screen. Realism is an approach to thinking about film that is often opposed to another major classical film theory called Formalism, which emphasizes formal techniques such as elaborate sets, fancy editing or camera moves, and can be considered more “artsy.” Give us an example of a film that you think is possibly an example of Realism, and one for Formalism, and tell us why you feel it falls in that category. Discuss which approach appeals to you more and tell us why, or, if you like, explain why you might like both.

More information on Realism can be found in out text under A-12, A-25, A-28, and A-43.

More information on Formalism can be found in this article, “Formalist Film Theory.”

Give us an example of a film that you think is possibly an example of Realism, and one for Formalism. Discuss which approach appeals to you more and tell us why, or, if you like, explain why you might like both.

_Chapter 11 introduces us to various critical theories and methods. If you were to write an essay on a film, tell us:

1) What film you would choose to write about.

2) What theory or method or critical approach, or combination of these, you would be interested in using (these must be from the reading).

3) What your essay would tell us about the film.

_In our materials under “Wk 5 – Learning Activities,” “Week 5 University Library,” is a wonderful article called “John Irving: On Writing the Screenplay of The Cider House Rules.”

This is a link to a trailer for The Cider House Rules (Hallström, 1999).

Many newer movies have elaborate and potentially misleading trailers. Think of an instance in which you went to watch a movie based on the trailer. Can you think of such an experience? How did the trailer entice you to watch a film you might not be drawn to? If so, what was the movie? Did you like it after being drawn in by the trailer? If possible, include a link to the trailer to share with your classmates. Alternatively, did you ever not want to watch a movie because of the trailer, then see the movie and actually like it? Please explain your answers.
