You are an HR manager in your organization. Charlie Smith, the Product Lifecycle Management Director has announced that he is leaving his position to take on another role in the company. Because of his announcement, you immediately posted the role. The job description used was the one in the system for PLM Director (the one that was used to hire Charlie). Charlie was successful and was a great people leader. He led a team of seasoned engineers despite only having a high school education. Charlie’s ideal replacement is Jeff Rose, who has worked under Charlie for many years and is respected by his team and is the likely person to take Charlie’s role. Jeff also does not hold a college degree.

One day, you were returning to your office and saw Jeff meeting with Sheryl Baker, the Chief Information Officer. They met on a regular basis because he aspired in taking on a more senior role in the company and was being mentored by her. During this one conversation with Sheryl, Jeff mentioned to her that he was interested in applying for Charlie’s role. She encouraged him to apply, knowing his qualifications. A few minutes after her meeting, she came to your office right next door and said that she wanted you to go into the system and change the requirement for the job from BS Degree recommend to required. You said, “that will eliminate Jeff from being a candidate.” She responded, “it is my decision and my organization. Please make the change.”

Jeff eventually applied for the position was kicked out because he did not meet the minimum requirements. He called you wanting an explanation. Please explain what you would do and why? Be prepared to discuss with your professor and classmates.
