In this first week of the Psychology of Learning, we explore personal fulfillment and what success looks like for you. We also take a close look at the role of self-awareness, and how to leverage that awareness to keep moving toward your goals. This week’s reading assignments examine the ingredients for success, benefits of self-awareness, and how to examine your own personal strengths.
Take a moment to consider your own strengths and how they relate to your personal goals.
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
- How do you define success?
- Consider some the ingredients for success (self-awareness, self-direction, self-esteem, and positive thinking). Which of these are the most difficult for you and why?
- Why is it important to understand your own strengths and weaknesses?
- How can becoming more self-aware help you reach your goals?
- What resources do you consider vital to your success (support, mentors, additional skills, etc.)?

Last week, we learned how to leverage our personal strengths and self-awareness in order to grow. This week, we take a deeper dive into the things that can get in the way of your success. Time management, priority setting, and procrastination are vital items discussed in our reading assignment. They are also issues critical to your success as a student and as a professional.
To prepare for this week’s discussion, consider goals you have had in the past and what aspects of time management may have prevented you from reaching them.
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
- How can you find balance and prioritize your academic, professional, and personal responsibilities?
- What are some effective time management strategies that you have used at home, at school, or in the workplace? Why were they successful?
- Consider a time when your own procrastination but you in a time crunch. What were your reasons for procrastinating? What were the consequences? What skills have you learned this week could you have used to change the outcome of the situation?

In Week 2 we examined items that can prevent you from reaching your goals and we discussed how to avoid procrastination and set priorities. This week, we explore how to set goals and look at impacts of stress in our lives. Your readings will cover SMART goal setting, overcoming obstacles, and stress management.
Before responding to the discussion, consider your own goals and the obstacles or stressors that you may face.

- How would you describe the benefits of creating SMART goals to a recent high-school graduate who is about to start college?
- Reflect on one of your own personal, academic,or professional goals. Which of the SMART components might need to be revisited, and why?

Our readings discuss self-esteem and how it relates to the self-talk you use internally and the confidence you have in yourself.
Reflect on the self-talk you use internally and how this impacts your confidence, attitude, and thinking habits.

- What are the differences among self-esteem, self-image, and self-value? Why does it help to differentiate among these terms?

During the last 4 weeks, you reflected on what success looks like, how to manage your time, setting attainable goals, and the importance of self-esteem and positive thinking. In our final week we examine intrinsic and extrinsic motivation along with self-discipline. Motivation helps drive us toward our goals while self-discipline and critical thinking can keep us on track.
Consider your own motivation and decision making habits that can either drive you toward or push you away from your goals.
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
- What are some goals you have set for yourself?
- Reflect on your own self-discipline and critical thinking habits. What are some changes you have made over the last 5 weeks to remain focused on your goals?
- What strategies can you use to remain committed to and on track towards achieving your goals over the next 12 months?
