In this discussion, you will have an opportunity to make connections between your prior knowledge and the new content you are learning this week. Consider your results from this week’s LearnSmart® Diagnostic in Connect® as context for your prior knowledge, as well as the new content you have learned about infancy and early childhood development.

Socioemotional development in infancy and early childhood sets the foundation for how children will respond in different types of situations throughout life. Consider the four types of parenting styles mentioned in Ch. 6 of Essentials of Lifespan Development: authoritative, authoritarian, neglectful, and indulgent.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • How do these parenting styles differ?

  • How might each parenting style affect socioemotional development?

  • What is an example of a behavior exhibited by both the parent and the child associated with each parenting style?

  • Which parenting style do you believe is most effective? Why?
