PSY 420 Week 2 Reinforcement Procedures Paper

In this assignment, you are able to connect the concepts of reinforcement to a real example of a mom and her children, which allows you to see how a highly effective reinforcer (the token economy) can still fail when not individualized.

Consider the following scenario:

A mother is trying to increase the amount of peas that her two children eat. She uses a sticker chart to monitor the amount of peas they are consuming and rewards them based on the number of stickers they have earned at the end of the week. The mother has found that this works for one child, but not the other.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper discussing the following:

  • Identify the behavior the mother is trying to reinforce.
  • Identify the possible functions of the behaviors.
  • Identify the method of reinforcement being used.
  • Explain possible reasons for this method working for one child but not the other.
  • Propose and outline three ideas that may work to increase pea consumption for the children, and include one method that uses negative reinforcement.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

PSY 420 Week 2 Behavioral Principles Application Presentation: Reinforcement

This assignment has you work with your team to determine how reinforcement–both positive and negative–is used within an applied setting.

Imagine your team works for a behavior analysis consulting group and has been asked to present on behavioral principles used in a specific setting.

Choose one setting in which to apply principles of behavior. Example settings include schools, hospitals, prisons, or businesses.

Evaluate the use of various types of reinforcement in the chosen setting.

Create a 10- to 12-slide presentation, including detailed speaker notes, that displays your findings and analysis and that proposes ideas for effective reinforcement.

Cite at least 2 to 4 sources in addition to the textbook.

Format citations in your presentation according to APA guidelines.

Note: When approaching Learning Team assignments, equal group work is required. Reference your Learning Team Charter for the details and guidance.

PSY 420 Week 3 Self-Management Project Topic Selection

You will be completing a self-management project in Week 5, and your topic needs to be approved by your instructor to ensure it is behavioral, measurable, and objectively defined. Doing so ensures that you select an appropriate topic but also gets you thinking about how to operationally define behavior.

Choose a target behavior for your Week 5 Self-Management Project.

Write a 175-word summary on the target behavior in observable and measurable terms. Include the methods that will be used to observe and acquire baseline data.

Submit your target behavior description, along with the dimension you will be measuring to your instructor for approval.

PSY 420 Week 3 Schedules of Reinforcement Worksheet

This assignment ensures you are familiar with the five schedules of reinforcement.

Complete the Schedules of Reinforcement Worksheet.

Schedules of Reinforcement Worksheet

Answer the following questions by identifying the correct schedule of reinforcement.

  1. Blass is tired of her students not being prepared for class each day. She knows that they are hard-working seniors who value getting an A in the class, and she wants to set up a schedule of work so they study hard and consistently. She schedules pop quizzes. Only she knows when those quizzes will be given. Assuming the students find the grade of A or B to be reinforcing, what schedule of reinforcement is at work here?

  2. Sally is trying to break up with her boyfriend. She refuses to text him back 90% of the time when he texts her. Sometimes, this means she will not text back after 10 or 20 texts. Finally, she gets frustrated (and lonely) and will text back but only to say ‘hi’ or ‘good luck at your football game’ or other seemingly meaningless comments. This process continues for months, where he texts her a few times every day, and eventually she will break down and answer. The reason the boyfriend is still texting so long after the breakup is due to which schedule of reinforcement?
  3. A mom and dad are teaching 2-year-old Johnny how to use the toilet. Every time he urinates even a little amount in the toilet they jump up and down and he gets a bite of his favorite cookie. This is an example of which schedule of reinforcement that is often used when first teaching a skill?
  4. Manuel is thinking about opening a new coffee shop in town. He is wanting to compete with the big companies in town, but he is not sure how to draw in the crowds. To start, he offers reward points. When customers come in, they get a star for every $5 they spend. Once they have spent $50, they receive a free medium drip coffee. Manuel is hoping to lure in repeat business through which schedule of reinforcement?
  5. Dr Lee notices his patients are not coming in for their routine visits on time. They often push them back, which causes backups at some time in the year (before school starts) and low numbers at other times of year (summer). He is wanting more consistent clientele and work and offers a 10% discount on his current rates if patients stick to their defined 3 appointments a year (every 3.3 months). Those patients who are motivated by this discount are adhering to which schedule of reinforcement?

PSY 420 Week 3 Designing a Reinforcement Exam

This assignment allows you to interact with schedules of reinforcement in a way that discriminates between example and non-examples.

Imagine you are the instructor of this course, and you are tasked with designing a multiple-choice exam covering the various schedules of reinforcement, behavior patterns, and possible outcomes, both partial and continuous.

Design an exam with your team about the five schedules of reinforcement. Include the following:

  • The exam must be 14 multiple-choice questions.
  • Highlight the correct answer.

Note: When approaching Learning Team assignments, equal group work is required. Reference your Learning Team Charter for the details and guidance.

PSY 420 Week 4 DRO Contingency Worksheet

This assignment highlights material from the last 2 weeks to ensure you are retaining important information, rehearsal of differential reinforcement, and application of punishment procedures.

Complete the DRO Contingency Worksheet.

Click the Assignment Files tab to submit your assignment.

DRO Contingency Worksheet

Decide which of the following concepts are most applicable to each scenario: differential reinforcement of other behavior, avoidance contingency, punishment by prevention of reinforcer, punishment by loss of reinforcer, or avoidance of loss.

Defend your answer 175 words each, using citations as needed.

  1. Sally, a 13-year-old teenager, is tired of having her mom nag her about her bedroom. Her mom nags about the clothes on the floor, the bed being unmade, and the trashcan spilling over in her bathroom.  Sally comes home from school in a bad mood and the last thing she wants to hear is her mom’s nagging voice. To get around the expected response from her mom, she cleans her room, makes her bed, and empties her trashcan.
  2. Sally makes the 7th-grade track team by finishing before another girl by less than 0.05 seconds in her event—the 400 meter relay.  Sally is proud of making the team but needs to work harder in the practices that follow. The first track meet does not go well. Out of the four girls on the relay team, she has the slowest time, so her track coach removes her from the team, and makes her sit as an alternate.
  3. In the weeks that follow being pulled from the track team, Sally listens to her coach’s direction and works hard to qualify for the next meet. Running her fastest time ever, Sally is excited when she qualifies to run the relay for the third track meet. Now that she has earned her spot on the team, she continues to work hard every week to keep her place.
  4. Chad is a 45-year-old man going back to school while working full time. A self-proclaimed procrastinator, his job as a computer programmer can handle his laid back style and ever-changing deadlines.  In school, however, he is having difficulty turning his homework in on time. The teacher has told him that success is impossible if he does not turn his papers in on time, yet he fails to do so week after week.
  5. Chad continues to stay in school and is a B-minus student due to the procrastination aspect of his work ethic. He has been complaining lately about school and thinking about withdrawing. His comments about the teacher, the class, the work and his grades are starting to get annoying so his mom decides to only reinforce his verbal behavior every 5 minutes he talks to her without making a negative comment about school.

PSY 420 Week 4 Behavioral Principles Application Presentation: Punishment

In this assignment, you will work together to develop a presentation that outlines what punishment is, how it is used, and any ethical considerations that should be made before implementing it.

Imagine your team works for a behavior analysis consulting group and has been asked to present on behavioral principles used in a specific setting.

Choose one setting in which to apply principles of behavior. Example settings include schools, hospitals, prisons, or businesses.

Evaluate the use of various types of punishment in the chosen setting.

Create a 10- to 12-slide presentation, including detailed speaker notes, that displays your findings and analysis and that proposes ideas for effective punishment.

Cite at least 2 to 4 sources in addition to the textbook.

PSY 420 Week 5 Self-Management Paper

This cumulative assignment allows you to consider everything you have learned over the past 5 weeks in an attempt to change a behavior of your own. This overall process is similar to what a board-certified behavior analyst would compete with a new client.

Refer to the approved behavior you would like to change, based on your submission to your instructor in Week 3.

Track baseline data over a 3-day period, using the Baseline Data Worksheet.

Write a 1,400- to 1,750-word paper that outlines an intervention plan for changing that behavior, in which you discuss the following:

  • Describe the target behavior.
  • Outline the dimensions of measurement/baseline measurement.
  • Describe the function of the baseline behavior.
  • Outline the goals of the behavioral change.
  • Propose a behavior intervention plan based on goals.

    • Provide a minimum of 2 antecedent changes.
    • Provide 4 to 5 consequence modifications. Choose consequences based on at least four of the following: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, negative punishment, positive punishment, and extinction.

  • Describe any potential barriers to treatment, as well as how you would overcome these barriers.
  • Describe the expected outcome if the behavior intervention plan was implemented and followed.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Submit your Baseline Data Worksheet along with your paper.

Click the Assignment Files tab to submit your assignment.

PSY 420 Week 5 Task Analysis

In this assignment, you will design a task analysis for an everyday behavior, which allows you to see how many steps are in each small task and how easy it is to forget steps. Allowing you to rework your analysis after attempting it helps demonstrate that your plans should always be considered a work-in-progress.

Choose one of the following tasks, and design a task analysis around it:

  • Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • Making a bed (starting with the fitted sheet on the bed)
  • Brushing your teeth
  • Putting on and tying your shoe
  • Washing your hair in the shower

Include all the necessary steps to complete the task.

Ask someone follow your steps and make note of what you missed or forgot.

Rewrite the task analysis based on that information, and submit the task analysis with a 175-word reflection on what following these steps taught you about task analysis and ensuring you include all the required steps.

Note: When approaching Learning Team assignments, equal group work is required. Reference your Learning Team Charter for the details and guidance.
