According to the principles of operant conditioning, reinforcement seeks to increase the chances of a behavior continuing, so we should only reinforce those behaviors that we would like to see again. What happens if we reinforce a behavior that we don’t want to see again?

Discuss your answers to these questions with your classmates:

  • When have you unintentionally reinforced an undesirable behavior? What was the behavior? How did you reinforce it?

  • What resulted because of this reinforcement?

  • What is the desired behavior in this situation? How can you bring about the desired behavior now? Would you use a specific schedule of reinforcement? Why or why not?
