Select one age group from the following:

  • Infant/toddler (birth through age 2)
  • Preschool (ages 3 to 4 years)
  • Kindergarten through third grade (ages 5 to 8 years)

Develop an early childhood unit that focuses on integrating language/literacy concepts and skills into developmentally appropriate activities across the curriculum.

Include the following components in your unit:

  1. Target age/grade level population: Identify and describe the age group for whom this early childhood unit is designed. Provide contextual information related to the major physical, cognitive, social, emotional, language, and aesthetic characteristics of this age group.
  2. Unit Introduction

o    Unit statement and rationale

  • A unit title that captures the reader’s attention
  • Introduction to the core book or author and a summary of how this unit integrates reading and writing strategies and literary elements
  • Justification of why this is an age/grade-level appropriate unit of study and an explanation of the appropriateness of the book or author to the age/grade-level

o    State and/or national standards covered in the unit

  1. Resources Toolkit: An annotated bibliography of 5 books and resources that support your unit

o    The books and resources should include 2 targeted for teacher use and 3 targeted for child and parent use.

o    At least 3 of your resources should be multimedia materials, including web-based resources.

o    Each annotation should begin with the reference. All annotations should be in alphabetical order.

o    Each annotation should be block indented and explicitly connect the selected book or resource to the unit in 3 to 5 sentences.

o    When selecting your resources, be mindful of the diversity of the children, including varied learning and developmental levels.

o    Format your bibliography according to APA guidelines.

  1. Lesson planning

o    Develop 5 lesson plans, each integrating reading with one content area, using the Reading Integration Lesson Plan Format.

o    Each lesson plan should address one of the following language/literacy areas:

  • Development of language and emergent literacy
  • Phonemic awareness, phonics, cueing systems, or structural analysis
  • Vocabulary
  • Fluency
  • Comprehension
  • Writing

  1. Reflection

o    Solicit feedback from a practicing teacher concerning the following areas of your unit (option: seek feedback during the required field experience for this course):

  • Appropriateness of the unit and book/author for the age/grade level
  • Appropriateness of the lesson procedures (content and instructional strategies) for the age/grade level
  • Potential for the children to achieve the objectives and meet the standards
  • Words of advice for designing and delivering integrated units

o    After the feedback session, write a 350-word reflection that describes implications for professional development and growth based on the specific teacher feedback.

Reading Integration Lesson Plan Format

  1. Central focus of lesson: Select state and/or national reading standard(s) for your identified age/grade level. Based on the selected standards, describe the focus of the topic in this lesson plan.

  1. Learning objectives: Develop learning objectives for the 45-minute lesson based on the following criteria:

o    Specific, measurable, and observable

o    What children should know and be able to do

o    Appropriately address the physical, cognitive, social, emotional, language, and/or aesthetic development and learning of the selected age/grade level

  1. Materials: Identify and provide the materials and instructional resources needed for the teacher and children. Resources may include technology, handouts, guest speakers, etc. Describe how the materials support and enhance the lesson.
  2. Instructional approach: Provide a detailed outline of the lesson based on the following:

o    Set the stage for learning

o    Lesson delivery and guided practice: Ensure that learning activities appropriately address the physical, cognitive, social, emotional, language, and/or aesthetic development and learning of the children; accommodate cultural and linguistic considerations; and identify opportunities for family and community involvement.
