EED 435 Week 5 Learning Team – Arts-Integrated Thematic Unit

Your principal is considering adopting a school-wide arts focus in the next school year as one way to increase academic achievement. However, she is concerned that the arts will not support academic instruction. She has asked different grade levels on the campus to submit arts-integrated thematic units for review to help her decide whether or not a school-wide arts focus is appropriate.

Develop a thematic unit appropriate for an identified grade level that integrates the arts and at least two other academic subject areas. The thematic unit must include at least one fully-developed lesson per team member.

Include the following in your arts-integrated thematic unit:

  • At least one of the arts disciplines (visual arts, drama, literary arts, music, dance, and creative movement)
  • At least two academic subject areas (mathematics, science, English/language arts, social studies, physical education, and health)
  • State or national standards in each of the subject areas for the appropriate grade level
  • Grade level, title, and time allotment
  • Rationale for the lesson
  • Content standards
  • Objectives
  • Materials
  • Anticipatory set or motivation
  • Procedures
  • Adaptations for diverse learners
  • Online, technology, and community resources
  • Assessment strategies for each lesson
  • Research to support your educational decisions

Include at least one performance assessment relating to one of the lesson plans as an appendix. This assessment must accommodate diverse learners.

Develop an assessment tool, such as a rubric, grading guide, or performance checklist, to accompany the performance assessment.

Write a 350-word overview of the thematic unit. Write the overview as an attachment to the thematic unit and write it as if you were submitting both the overview and the thematic unit to your principal.

Submit your assignment.
