Create a visual organizer (e.g., chart, diagram, etc.) that compares the differences between Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP).

 

Provide examples of each.

 

Include 1 or more links to videos that demonstrates an EL student who has acquired BICS and CALP.

 

Write a 350- to 525-word reflection, to accompany the visual, addressing the following questions:

  • How does this video(s) demonstrate an example of BICS and CALP?
  • Why is it important for teachers to know the difference between BICS and CALP?
  • How long does it take for a student to acquire BICS? And CALP? Why does it take longer for students to acquire CALP?
  • What are some ways to support EL students’ development of BICS and CALP? How can you incorporate technology to help support that?

 

Be sure to address all four questions. I will be focusing my feedback on Question #4. In your response to this question, be sure to describe how you will support students in developing BICS and CALP and how you will use technology to support both BICS and CALP.
