Although many police officers demonstrate ethical behavior and perform their work in an exemplary manner, some officers do engage in unprofessional conduct. Abuse of discretion and authority, use of excessive force, discriminatory practices, dishonesty, and unprofessional behavior are all examples of officer misconduct. The police subculture plays a critical role as a behavior control mechanism by creating a psychological and physical dependent environment for officers. This subculture needs to be examined as a factor in unethical practices, and possibly changed.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • What are some of the more important ethical issues in policing?

  • Discuss some unethical practices by police officers and how the police subculture may play an important role in that behavior.

  • Do you think police officers are more ethical today compared to decades ago? Explain.
