Over the last few weeks, you’ve been developing a virtual binder that you use for future reference in the early childhood classroom. The binder includes important assessment-related information and a collection of resources, tools, and strategies for assessing young children in early childhood settings. Everything you add to this binder should be related to early childhood, or birth through 3rd grade.

The purpose of this binder is to help you understand the multiple methods of assessment in early childhood education and how to use assessment to guide decision making.

Complete the following for Section 2:

• Explain the purposes of formative and summative assessments, including appropriate examples of each.
• Explain the multi-tiered response to intervention (RTI) process and how it supports data-driven decision making.
• Describe the types and roles of documentation in the assessment of young children.
• Compare the types of observation typically used in the assessment of young children, including the advantages and disadvantages of each.
• Describe the use of checklists in the assessment of young children, including best practices for design.
• Explain the types and uses of rating scales and rubrics used in the assessment of young children.
• Describe the types and purposes of portfolio assessment, including best practices for setting up a system.
