While there are many powerful and complex political forces that currently influence school governance in our country, you may be wondering why it’s important for you to know educational politics. The answer is that in order for teachers to help set the direction of educational reform, they must have an understanding of national, state, and local education politics and structures.

Consider the following individuals or groups that believe they should play an important role in school governance, and rank them in order (from greatest to least influence) to reflect how much control you think each should have in schools:

• Federal Government
